The area: Technical Infrastructure

The role: Network Engineer

Google is proud to boast a network that provides service to millions of Internet users around the world. The Network Engineering team is responsible for operating that network reliably and at scale. As a member of the team, you have a direct impact on design and feature enhancements to keep our systems running smoothly. You also ensure that network operations are safe and efficient by monitoring network performance, coordinating planned maintenance, adjusting hardware components and responding to network connectivity issues. Google's complex network generates a constant stream of challenges which require you to continually be innovative with an evolving set of technologies. Keeping the network reliable ensures that our users stay connected with our suite of applications, products and services.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement designs, standards and policies across Google's tera-scaled network infrastructure
  • Ensure continued smooth operation of the global network infrastructure focusing on operational reliability and final point of escalation for the network
  • Lead and participate on projects that affect the global network, meeting massive scaling, reliability, and performance challenges
  • Work on improving processes and automation for networking infrastructure and supporting systems

Minimum qualifications:

  • BA or BS in EE/CS/CE/Telecommunications. In lieu of degree, 4 years of experience.

Preferred qualifications:

  • 5 years of substantial experience in a Network Engineer/Architecture position with an Internet service provider or enterprise-level network.
  • Strong experience working in a Unix/Linux environment at systems administrator level.
  • Experience developing tools to manage networks and automate procedures using languages such as Python, Java, Javascript or C++.
  • Network certifications such as CCIE/JNCIE (or equivalent level of experience) is a good to have.
  • Excellent knowledge and troubleshooting ability of TCP/IP, routing (BGP, IGPs and MPLS ) and link layer protocols.
