Al-Hamidiyah Souq (Arabic: سوق الحميدية‎) is the largest and the central souk in Syria, located inside the old walled city of Damascus next to the Citadel. The souq starts at Al-Thawra street and ends at the Umayyad Mosque plaza. It was one of the treasures featured in Around the World in 80 Treasures presented by Dan Cruickshank.

  • Do not miss local pistacchio cream, fresh green pistacchio nuts, and spend some time in antique shops. Look for Sirian candied fruits (delicious!) and Aleppo olive soap. Buy yourself a galabia (Arabic long shirt). Do not forget to bargain hard - you're expected to do it. Still safe enough - pickpocketing not a big problem, thanks to strictness of the laws...
