Guinea Pigs, A to Z (Almost!)
Adoptable Elvis sports a fun hair style!

A is for Adoption! We have so many wonderful guinea pigs looking for a new family at the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria.

B is for Breed. There are many different breeds of guinea pigs, which give them a wide variety of features, such as hair color, patterns, lengths, body size and even ear shape! The most popular breeds are the American/English, Abyssinian, Teddy and Peruvian.

D is for Diet. Keep your guinea pig healthy and happy with a diet of Timothy hay, vegetables and some fruit, supplemented by alfalfa or Timothy hay-based pellets and vitamin C. Chewing is a great way to keep their teeth from overgrowing.

H is for Home for the Pawlidays! As part of the Home for the Pawlidays adoption event, all of our guinea pigs’ adoption fees have been pre-paid through the end of 2021. What better time to adopt your newest family member?

J is for Jump: Young guinea pigs like to give small, quick jumps called “popcorning” when they are happy, so it’s safest to hold them while sitting on the floor or low to the ground.

P is for Personality. Just like us, guinea pigs can have different personalities. They can be shy and introverted, friendly and outgoing, and, at times, silly or confident.

S is for Social. Guinea pigs are very social little animals and love to be around people as well as other guinea pigs. Who couldn’t add some guinea pig snuggling time to their daily routine?

T is for Teach. Guinea pigs are smart and love to learn new things. You can practice target training with them and teach them many other tricks, including Spin and Stand Up!

W is for Wheek!!! That’s the sound a guinea pig makes when he or she is excited. They can also emit a rumbling sound when they’re upset or purr when they’re happy.

Z is for Zoomies. Younger guinea pigs get bursts of energy and love to run around their enclosures. Make sure to give your guinea pig plenty of space to run around in and even supervised time to play in a large area.

And back to…

A is for Advice.  If it’s your first time adopting a guinea pig family member, our team is happy to answer any questions you might have, from feeding and supplies to living space and veterinary care.  We can’t wait to introduce you to your new guinea pig best friend!
