Easy Mug Rug Crochet Pattern

How to Crochet an Easy Mug Rug.

This easy Mug Rug Crochet Pattern uses the basic single crochet stitch. Mug Rugs are such a quick and easy crochet project and they add a bit of practical fun into your home. Mug Rugs are a great way to protect your table surfaces in your home. Make sure you use a washable yarn for your mug rugs as they are made to catch the occasional drips from the cups etc that are placed on them.

Easy mug rug crochet pattern

Hi everyone. I am so excited to share this easy Mug Rug crochet pattern with you. This attractive mug rug is called the Super Simple Mug Rug because it is made with one of the first crochet stitches you learn. It uses the basic single crochet stitch and then I added some gorgeous fringes. It truly looks so good and just shows how simple things can be so stylish and useful too.

What is a Mug Rug?

If you are new to mug rugs and wonder just what they are, they are exactly what the name describes,  they are rugs for your mugs. They are a slightly larger than the regular coasters we usually make for our cups.  Coasters are meant for your glasses and cups, a mug rug is slightly larger. You can even make one big enough so there is room to place a some snacks beside your favourite mug.
Join me in the new rage for crochet Mug Rugs. They have recently become a very popular crochet project with makers as they work up so quickly and are so useful. Be careful because they can become addictive as they are so quick and easy to make and are perfect gifts any time of the year. Combining them with a dish cloth or pot holder also makes for a great housewarming gift.

Description of the Super Simple Mug Rug

The Super Simple Mug Rug is an easy crochet mug rug that you can use for placing your coffee or tea cups on, or even your cold beverages.
This easy crochet mug rug pattern makes up into a 4′ by 6″ mug rug , it is longer if you count the fringe.
To make this easy crochet mug rug you will need worsted weight yarn, acrylic or cotton with both work. You will also need a 5mm H crochet hook and a yarn needle.
The stitches used in this easy mug rug are the single crochet stitch and it is 14 rows of single crochet in all. So it makes up really quickly. Adding the fun fringe will take a little extra time. But it is so worth while as it makes your mug rug super special.
Here is a close up of how the stitches look.

Introducing the “Super Simple Mug Rug” Pattern.

The Super Simple Mug Rug is a beginner friendly pattern and is a great project for practicing the Singe Crochet Stitch, with ‘easy to follow’ instructions. It uses the single crochet stitch to create this lovely texture.
Mug Rugs are such a fun and easy project to make for your home. They also make great gifts for Mother’s Day or as a housewarming gift. A set of four tied up with a piece of yarn in a bow is such a sweet gift idea.

Instructions for the Super Simple Mug Rug.

Row 2: sc into the first st and every stitch across, ch1 and turn
Row 3-14: Repeat Row 2.
Finish off and weave in the ends.

The Fringe: Optional

NOTE: These pictures are from another project so the stitches ae different and there are more strands in each fringe in the demo pictures. I am using them here for your reference.

Lay the mug rug on a flat surface with the right side facing up.
For the fringe I cut strands of yarn that are 4” long. I used a business card to wrap my yarn around. I placed 12 fringes across each end of my mug rug, so I wrapped the yarn around the card 24 times, allowing for 2 strands of yarn for each fringe. Then I cut through all the strands on one side of the business card, creating 24 individual 4” long strands.
Each fringe has two, 4” strands of yarn, which are folded, (put the ends together and create the loop that can be threaded into the edge of the mug rug and then knotted on). This creates a 4 stranded fringe.
I use a crochet hook to pull the loops through and then thread the long fringe through the loop and pull tight to create the knot. Here is how I do it.

Insert your crochet hook up and through a loop on the edge of the mug rug, do this from the back of the work.
Grab the loop created by folding the strands of yarn. Use a hook that is big enough to hook the yarn and pull through the loop.
Always pull the fringe loop through from the same direction so the knots all match.

Enlarge the loop you have pulled down so it is big enough to bring the long strands down and thread them through this loop.

Pull the loop tight and move on to the next fringe.

I spaced my fringes across the edge of the mug rug.  You can do 7 fringes like I did, or you can customize it and do as many as you like.
Now repeat the process for the other edge of your mug rug.
When you have the fringes done on each edge of your mug rug you can trim the fringe to the preferred length. This is up to your individual taste.

Voila, you now have a beautiful Super Simple Mug Rug.
