Module 1: Hardware
Objective:
- After completing this module, you will be able to identify and define the key functional components of computer hardware.
A computer is an electronic device, operating under the control of instructions stored in its memory. It follows a set of instructions and makes calculations. Computers are made up of many different components. These components can be mixed and matched in thousands of different ways so that you can customize a computer to meet your exact needs. These different components are called hardware.
Hardware is all the hard parts of a computer that you can touch with your hands. These components include input and output devices which you will learn about in Modules 3 and 4.
Below is a picture of a standard computer. Common computer hardware components have been identified. Please take a moment to learn the different hardware components of a computer.

Peripherals
A computer can not do everything by itself. It needs help. Other devices that work with a computer are called peripherals. These devices are outside of the Central Processing Unit (CPU) and are not essential to the computer itself. The mouse, speakers, microphone, headphones, and printer above are peripheral devices. Other examples of peripherals are shown in the picture on the left.
