BUANG BAYI – Behind the Baby Hatch

Synopsis:

Buang Bayi, translating literally to “throw away baby”, is a term that is used to coin the phenomenon of baby dumping in Malaysia. There have been a rising number of cases of abandoned babies, where they are found by the roadside, left in the bushes, or thrown in the bin. In worser cases, babies are found in the toilet or washed up along the river.

The baby hatch – a drop box where mothers can anonymously abandon their babies in a safe place to be cared for – is set up by OrphanCARE to provide an alternative to baby dumping, ensuring that the baby’s life would be saved and then finding an adoptive family for the child.

Our documentary aims to explore the Buang Bayi issue through the baby hatch, uncovering reasons of unwanted pregnancies and questioning the future in supporting these mothers struggle to keep their babies.
