Hot chocolate. It might be my best friend in the whole wide world. It’s at least my favorite drink.
I’m a chocolate lover through and through, but with hot chocolate, it’s about more than just that. It’s the experience of sitting down with my hot chocolate and checking my email, reading a good book or checking off some blog tasks while I enjoy the hot chocolate. In fact, it’s 12:05 on an August afternoon as I write this and guess what is next to me? My hot chocolate. It’s my happy place.
So when Katie from Made to be a Momma made this cute little Mug Rug pattern, I fell in love. It’s a super easy project, a great scrap buster AND you could use it for your hot chocolate (or whatever it is YOU love).
Here’s Katie:
I love the Fall season. The hot cocoa, warm sweaters, and crisp air is just downright refreshing….not to mention the comfort foods that come with the change of the seasons 🙂
This mug rug pattern is the perfect gift idea for the fall and winter season. They come together really quickly and can be as simple or as complex as you want them to be. You can applique different scenes such as pumpkins or snowman or you can mix some of your favorite colors and give it a quilt look. I personally love a mug rug that has multiple colors that works all year round 🙂
So here’s the mug rug pattern!
Mug Rug Pattern:
Supplies Needed:
- Strips of fabric
- Base Fabric
- Sewing Machine
Mug Rug Sewing Instructions:
First, you will begin by cutting your fabric pieces in strips. My strips were about 2 inches wide and 8 inches long. Mug rugs are typically any size between a 4 x 7 and a 12 x 8. They are known for being able to place your mug on with a tasty treat such as a croissant, bagel or cookie. Determine what size you want your finished mug rug to be and then adjust your measurements accordingly.
Once your strips have been cut, you will lay the strips together, pretty sides touching, and sew. Repeat with all the strips until you have one large piece. If you want to add some extra stitching you can top stitch each strip.
Once all your strips of fabric have been sewn together, press it with a hot iron. Use your fabric as a pattern to cut out your base fabric. This helps makes sure they are the same size.
Place your main piece of fabric on top of your quilted fabric, pretty sides together, and sew around all four sides being sure to leave a 3 in-4 in gap for turning. Turn your piece right side out and press with a hot iron. Top stitch around all four edges being sure to sew the opening closed. This is such a great project for fat quarters, and left over strips of fabric from other projects. It’s quick, simple, and useful!
