Thanks to the research efforts and proposal made by Prof. Hu Ruifa from the CAS Center for Agricultural Policy and Prof. Liang Luohui from the United Nations University, the traditional agricultural system of fish and rice culture system developed in Longxian village in China's southeast Zhejiang Province has recently selected by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) as a globally important agricultural heritage system (GIAHS).

    GIAHS is defined by FAO as remarkable land use systems and landscapes which are rich in biological diversity evolving from the ingenious and dynamic adaptation of a community or population to its environment and the needs and aspirations for sustainable development.

    The fish and rice culture system has developed in Longxian village for more than 1,200 years. As a unique traditional agricultural system, it proves itself advantageous in serving the local farmers with various primary products and services.  The system can effectively improve the nutrition of the rice and in turn increase the farmers' economic interests, keep the crops from pests, safeguards the local biodiversity, and maintain the cycle of carbon and nutrients in a smooth run. It's believed to be of great significance for China's agricultural sustainable development as well as for the worldwide agricultural advancement.

    In order to successfully kick off the project, a symposium was held from June 9 to 11, which convened scores of specialists, including scholars from the CAS Institute of Geographic Sciences and Natural Resources Research, the Center for Agricultural Policy and Institute of Botany. An expert committee of the project will be formed on the basis of the preparatory committee for CAS Center of Natural and Cultural Heritage.

    The GIAHS project aims to establish the basis for international recognition, conservation and sustainable management of globally important ingenious agricultural heritage systems and their associated landscapes, biodiversity, knowledge systems and cultures throughout the world. Specific action programs will be developed in 5-10 pilot sites/ systems, as well as activities to leverage global, regional and national policy and institutional support.
