Non-Alcoholic Beer Reviews + Post Your Pics!

Starting a new thread here for fun and productive discussions on non-alcoholic beers aka. “near-beers”. It’s not for everybody, and it might not even be for me. We shall see.

Not quitting drinking, but I have come to the realization that I was drinking way too much for several years now. Lots of good reasons for me to give non-alcoholic beer a fighting chance, such as:
  • My A1C blood sugar is not so good
  • My sleep quality sucks when I drink
  • Driving drunk is not smart, and not worth the consequences.
There are many near-beer options these days. I was at Metro supermarket yesterday and bought a whole bunch of different "near-beers" to try. There were so many to choose from. The cashier and I even shared a laugh about my interesting and unique shopping spree.

Now for the review criteria part of it…. Off the top of my head, here is some informal review criteria I can think of are:
  • Price – This is RFD, of course price is a factor
  • Tasting Notes – Subjective
  • “Drinking straight out of the container rating” – Is drinking it in the bottle/can any good? Look and feel.
  • Health benefits - Unlike alcohol products, non-alc products have nutrition info! Amazing!
  • Sugar content - How many grams of sugar?
  • Ingredients quality and Transparency in labelling - Any sketchy ingredients?
  • Overall Rating Comments – Amazing? Okay and would buy again? Not my thing, but may be appeals to certain taste profile for guests, etc? Horrible, never again?

More than one way to do this, that’s for sure. Please do share your experience, wisdom, remarks, and comments. We can probably get very critical with this sort of stuff, but let’s try to keep it light and fun if we can. Smiling Face With Open Mouth

Review of cold ones to follow.

First review: Selection Red House Lager

Price – $9.49 for 12 pack of 355 ml + HST… like a buck a beer I guess?
Tasting Notes – excellent! Tasted like real beer. It has a bit of that Rickards Red feel to it, with a lager mouthfeel. Light hoppiness.
Drinking straight out of the container rating” – Decent tailgate lawnmower beer experience
Calories - 50
Sugar content - 3 g
Ingredients quality and Transparency in labelling - caramel added for colour. Sugars added most likely for the fermentation process.

Overall Rating Comments – Amazing! It did not taste non alcoholic at all!! Incredible beer. If this thing ever goes on sale, I’m buying the whole shelf. What an amazing first review!

Yes! I had this Ireland recently. It was very close to the real thing, especially on tap over there. Almost everything was the same. Nothing short of spectacular.

It’s a bit hard to find in GTA. Some stores carry it. The one near my house ran out pretty fast before I had a chance.

If you're concerned about A1C / sugar / diabetes, but still want to drink normal beer with alcohol, stick to lagers (that are traditionally and naturally made, and don't have any adjuncts) and west coast IPAs.

Minimize consumption of Hazy IPAs, stouts, and cask ale (or any other beer that are either unfiltered or where there's still live fermentation, including Belgians and other bottle conditioned beers), as these will have more sugar in the finished drinkable product.

The natural brewing process for lagers and west coast IPAs will have minimal sugar content in the finished product.
(yeast eats it up, and remainder is filtered out).
They will have less sugar than these non-alcoholic alternatives.

Despite beer not being allowed to have nutrition labels for some reason, some alcohol in moderate amounts will have more benefits than non-alcoholic beer.

Duttydeals review #2: Grolsch 0

Price – $8.49 for 4 pack of 500 ml + HST… about $2.39 per king can all in

Tasting Notes – has some similarities to the regular Grolsch, but it’s really not the same at all. Light hoppiness. Tasted lavender, floral, and was much sweeter tasting

“Drinking straight out of the container rating” – not bad, decent king can experience

Calories - 115

Sugar content - 15 g

Ingredients quality and Transparency in labelling -natural aromas was listed

Overall Rating Comments – would buy again, but not my favourite. Too sweet for my taste. Nutritional value is probably not good with the higher than expected sugar content. Good beer to have on hand for guests as it’s a brand name beer label

Above is one of my staples. Easy to find at Metro. I haven't tried it in a few years but for shoppers of Loblaws or the Real Canadian Superstore, PC Red Brew Dealcoholized Lager Beer, also gets good reviews.

--------------------------

Coors Edge 12x355ml. for $16.99 = $1.42 per can

Another staple is Coor's Edge which actually tastes close to a North American lager, at least to me. 40 calories, 1 gram of sugars, ingredients beer, natural flavours.

----------------------------

Gruvi Mocha Nitro Stout 6x355ml. for $13.99 = $2.34 per can

The third and last beer which is harder to find is Gruvi Mocha Nitro Stout. 90 calories, it says pn the label 0 grams of sugar, but then again from what I've read, malt is an added sugar. Ingredients water, malted barley, malted wheat, malted oats, hops, lactose, natural mocha flavouring, yeast.

I don't have the Gruvi too often

----------------------

I do drink alcoholic beers as well.

I bought it at a small local grocer, but unfortunately they stopped supplying it. Not sure, but they may sell it at Sobey's.

I haven't visited recently, but if there's a Healthy Planet store nearby, you may want to try there. Apparently, they stock it along with other non-alcoholic beers.

Well.ca delivers, but unless you meet their minimum purchase, it becomes quite expensive.

Duttydeals review #3: Irresistibles white Belgian style beer (Metro House Brand)

Price – $9.99 for 6 pack of 355 ml + HST… about $1.88 per can

Tasting Notes – amazing! Almost tastes like a real beer. It’s got some aromas and fruitiness reminiscent of Belgian beer, but I would describe it more as a sour beer style. Not hoppy. Pretty complex for what it is, considering 0 booze.

“Drinking straight out of the container rating” – not bad, decent tailgate experience

Calories - 45

Sugar content - 9 g

Ingredients quality and Transparency in labelling -natural and honest as it gets!

Overall Rating Comments – Nice beer, would definitely buy again! However, it’s twice the price as the other Metro house brand beer. It’s the premium brand ‘Irresistables’, as opposed to their regular ‘Selection’ house brand. Due to the higher cost, my RFD brain would not put this in the daily rotation category.

Duttydeals review #4: Selection Blonde Lager

Price – $9.49 for 12 pack of 355 ml + HST… like a buck a beer I guess?

Tasting Notes – Excellent! Tasted like real beer. Sort of tastes like domestic blonde ale. Smells pleasantly “yeasty”. Light hoppiness. Hint of apple cider taste. Ale-like finish.

“Drinking straight out of the container rating” – Decent tailgate lawnmower beer experience

Calories - 35

Sugar content - 3 g

Ingredients quality and Transparency in labelling -caramel added for colour. Sugars added most likely for the fermentation process.

Overall Rating Comments – Similar comments to review #1 above regarding the Red Lager. Amazing! It did not taste non alcoholic at all!! Not that I’m counting calories, but this product has notably the lowest caloric content I’ve come across so far, at 35 calories. It's going on the daily rotation!

Duttydeals review #5: Beck’s 0

Price – $29.95 for 24 x 330 ml pack all-in at Beer Store

Tasting Notes – It’s like they took a Beck’s and boiled out the alcohol. Straw-like aroma. Very hoppy bitter. Unfortunately, the body of the beer feels completely stripped. The finish is super dry, sort of like a Japanese style beer. But it is refreshing, and feels natural. The knock is I don’t think I can drink more than one. It’s probably too bitter with a lack of mouthfeel for most people I think. It actually “tastes healthy”. It’s refreshing to have one, but I don’t think I really enjoyed my second very much.

“Drinking straight out of the container rating” – Glass bottle is awesome. Really nice.

Calories - 45

Sugar content - 1 g

Ingredients quality and Transparency in labelling - Water, malted barley, hops, that’s all!

Overall Rating Comments – It’s not the tastiest, but ironically I could see this making it into my daily. It has the lowest sugar content I’ve seen so far at 1 g per 330 ml bottle. The quality of ingredients is right up my alley, as I really like European beers in general. It’s very cost effective too, but very low stock at the Beer Store (from I’ve seen so far).

Wow! Look at the availability and competitive pricing online for the non-alcoholic sector. Completely mindblown. Thanks for sharing those links!

I noticed that too. Some worst than others. However I find the trick is to chill the beers really cold.
That PC red beer is my go to right now.

No. I don't get any after taste. Either I like the taste while drinking it, or I don't, depending on the beer. There's always the feeling that I'm missing something, which of course is the alcohol.

Duttydeals review #6: Gerstel Alcoholfrei Mild

Price – $15.99 for 6 pack of 330 ml + HST; it's about $3 per bottle

Tasting Notes – Pleasantly malty and floral. Great mouthfeel. Excellent lightly hopped finish. Tastes kind of craft-like, but it is sweeter tasting than a regular alcoholic beer. It does not taste like a traditional beer; it's almost more reminiscent of a "malt drink".

Container Rating – Glass bottle is awesome. Really nice.

Calories - 63 kCal, based on 19 kCal per 100 ml

Sugar content - 8 g, based on 2.4 g per 100 ml

Ingredients quality and Transparency in labelling - As transparent and simple as it gets

Overall Rating Comments – This is one of the most expensive non-alcoholic beer products out there at nearly $3 per little bottle. It's very unique tasting, almost like those boutique Belgian style beers . Due to the high price, this would not make it into my daily rotation. It's a nice bottle to keep around for guests to try something different. Quality of the product is pretty good. It's a bit on the sweet side, and it's a completely different flavour compared to most other products.
