Fast forward to September 2023, and this mobile sensation has clocked an impressive $600 million in cumulative sales, with one significant milestone that has the industry buzzing: a staggering $55 million in just 35 days after entering the highly competitive Chinese market.

MapleStory M's journey began as an extension of Nexon's iconic 'MapleStory,' a game that has captured the hearts of players worldwide since its inception in 2003. In October 2016, this cherished IP transitioned seamlessly to the mobile realm, setting the stage for its global expansion in July 2018. Then, on August 17th, 2023, the game made a monumental leap as it entered the lucrative Chinese market under the publishing prowess of Tencent and Segi Cheonsung.

The statistics speak volumes: 37.7% of MapleStory M's cumulative sales come from its native Korea, followed by the United States (13.6%), Taiwan (13.5%), and Japan (9.5%). China, a relatively late entrant in this journey, has claimed a notable 9.1% of the sales pie. However, it's the post-launch sales distribution that underlines China's ascension to prominence. From August 17 to September 20, 2023, the Chinese iOS market dominated, contributing a staggering 87.9% of sales during this brief period.

But numbers alone don't tell the full story. MapleStory M's dramatic entrance into the Chinese market didn't just boost its sales figures; it shook up the global MMORPG rankings. From being ranked 9th before its Chinese debut, the game skyrocketed to the 2nd position, a testament to the profound impact of its initial success in this new territory.

A key factor in MapleStory M's success lies in the formidable recognition and effective localization strategy of the MapleStory IP in the Chinese market. Reviews have consistently mentioned 'familiarity,' 'music,' and 'graphics' as standout features. Players reveled in the game's ability to capture the essence of the beloved original IP on mobile platforms, invoking cherished memories of the past.

The localization strategy employed by Tencent and Segi Cheonsung, along with inventive collaborations such as 'Dali Tourism,' proved pivotal in resonating with Chinese players. Offline events on launch day further solidified the game's connection with its audience.

However, it wasn't just strategy and nostalgia that powered MapleStory M's meteoric rise. The introduction of new characters and events spurred sales growth. On August 23, the game introduced a new job, leading to a remarkable 29% spike in daily sales. A special compensation event on September 2 saw a 30% increase in sales, marking the second-highest daily sales to date.

Before MapleStory M's arrival, Tencent's 'Glory of the Prince' held the lion's share of mobile game sales in China at 45.3%. 'Battlegrounds' followed at 14.7%, and 'League of Legends: Wild Rift' at 6.5%. Post-launch, 'Honor of the Prince' and 'Battlegrounds' maintained their positions, but MapleStory M surged to third place with 9.4%, cementing its status as a major revenue source for Tencent in the Chinese market.

As if its success wasn't impressive enough, MapleStory is now setting its sights on a new frontier: web3 gaming and blockchain technology. This move promises to redefine the MMORPG experience. The game aims to combine its core Reward Experience (RX) with blockchain technology to create RX 2.0. This innovative approach will increase the rarity and utility of in-game items, making them valuable both within and outside the game.

MapleStory's ambitious plans extend to the creation of an NFT-based ecosystem, where players can earn limited quantity NFTs through gameplay. These NFTs can be traded peer-to-peer, offering a more controlled approach to inflation compared to unlimited issuance systems.

Moreover, MapleStory N, the PC MMORPG counterpart, will extend the MapleStory Universe NFTs to mobile platforms.
