A Message from the President
October 2018 Dear Ouimet Fund Friends, I am proud to share that this past year has continued our steady and wonderful growth pattern. While this is very rewarding, we are at the same time embarking on a comprehensive strategic planning process to enhance our mission. The board will be addressing ways to do even more for our future Scholars as their need grows so rapidly in this era of dramatic college tuition increases.

In 2018-2019, we celebrate our 70th year with many ways by which we can impact the lives of our Scholars. Most importantly, with your help, Scholar awards increased to $2.2 Million, a $200,000 increase over last year. This increase is our largest ever, and represents growth of 38% in four years. Our thriving endowed scholarship program is again a major catalyst. A total of $800,000, or 36% of our awards, will come from the yield on our 148 endowments. As we go to press we will have added seven new awards since last year. Fittingly, one has been created by a member of the original class of scholars from 1949. Trustee Bob McDonald and his family have endowed the Bob and Elaine McDonald Family Scholarship. The Fund has come a long way since awarding $4,600 to 13 students back in that first year. The total since then is a tremendous $36 Million to 5,900 students! As The Fund grows, we also see a continued high number of annual scholarship applications. Over the past four years applications have increased 38%, putting great pressure on our fundraising. We have also seen great increases in the number of colleges our students attend (164), female scholars (70), minority scholars (29), and inner-city scholars (67). We are happy that our 326 financial scholars this year have an average annual financial award of $6,548, which translates to four-year assistance of approximately $26,200. However, our goal has always been to fund as much of the “unmet need” as possible and we still hover in the 40% range. Five million dollars of total unmet need is a huge hurdle. As one of our directors said recently, “We have a lot of great kids who still need a lot of help.” Also, helping fuel our scholarship increase has been growth in our Club Relations, Golf Marathon, Annual Fund and Alumni Donations. Each of those programs are critical to our continued success. This past year, we were proud to present Jim Furyk with our 22nd Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf at our Annual Banquet. It was a wonderful night, and one each of the attendees won't soon forget. I’m delighted to announce that Hall of Famer and NBC golf broadcast commentator Johnny Miller will be our 2019 honoree on April 11 at the Sheraton Boston. Our dinner has been the largest golf dinner in the U.S., the award one of golf’s most prestigious and our 2019 event with Mr. Miller should be a great occasion to kick off the season. The Banquet is our prime event for spreading the message of our mission and showcasing our Scholars, and we know Mr. Miller is excited to be part of it. Cont. . 1 2018 IMPACT REPORT
Throughout the history of the Ouimet Banquet, a special highlight has always been the introduction of representatives of Mr. Ouimet’s and Eddie Lowery’s families. Sadly, Mr. Ouimet’s two daughters, Barbara McLean and Janice Salvi, passed away in the last year. We also lost three Ouimet Fund Trustees – Bill Foley, Ray LaJoie, and Dixon Sykes. They and the other many friends shown in our Memorial Donations section will all be greatly missed. The future of the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund is bright. Through your generosity and the hard work of the Ouimet Staff, Board of Directors, alumni, corporate partners and volunteers, we remain committed to strengthening and growing the Fund to send more deserving young women and men to college. 2018 Ouimet Banquet Highlights
Furyk Honored at Ouimet Banquet
T
2018 Banquet Honoree Jim Furyk sat with Master of Ceremonies Dave Marr III for a memorable conversation.
he 2018 Ryder Cup Captain Jim Furyk was the guest speaker and honored with the 21st Francis Ouimet Award for Lifelong Contributions to Golf at the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s 67th Annual Banquet. The Banquet, which continues to be the largest annual golf dinner in America, was held on Tuesday, March 27th at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. The Connolly Group – Morgan Stanley was again the Presenting Sponsor. "We were thrilled to have Jim Furyk as our 2018 Honoree," said Fund President Jim Blue. "Jim has a tremendous record, and has been one of the top players on the PGA TOUR for the last 24 years. He's played on 9 Ryder Cup teams, including here in Boston in 1999, and was preparing to be Ryder Cup captain. He is also greatly respected for his charitable work," said Jim Blue, Ouimet Fund President. Veteran golf broadcaster David Marr III served as Master of Ceremonies for the third straight year and conducted a very entertaining and meaningful interview with Mr. Furyk.
Other Special Features
In addition to Mr. Furyk, the evening featured a wonderful speech from Student Speaker Josh Belinsky, who caddied for 12 years at Blue Hill Country Club and recently graduated from Northeastern University ‘18. Josh described overcoming obstacles in his life, his involvement in several college entrepreneurial pursuits, and how the Ouimet Fund support was critical to his graduating from Northeastern. Josh has since been invited to join the Ouimet Fund’s Board of Directors. Dennis J. Kelly, a Ouimet Alumnus (Williams College ’68) and the Fund’s Secretary-Counsel, was honored with the Richard F. Connolly Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Kelly and his firm, Boston-based Burns & Levinson, have been involved in a wide variety of legal projects over the years and Denny is truly a critical member of the Ouimet Fund Board of Directors.

Student Speaker Josh Belinsky, '18 spoke beautifully about what the Ouimet Scholarship meant to him and his family.
A
resident of Westwood, Massachusetts, Josh Belinsky was a dedicated caddie at Blue Hill Country Club in Canton for 12 years. In addition to his parents, he credits lessons learned on the golf course and the importance of real-world experience for much of his success. Josh received a top-notch business degree from Northeastern University, and graduated with a keen interest in entrepreneurial work. Through Northeastern, Josh held internships at Liberty Mutual and worked in a Co-Op program at State Street Bank. He has also been involved in several entrepreneurial pursuits including launching an energy bar product, a non-lactate chocolate milk product, and a real estate techonology company. At Westwood High School, from which he graduated in 2013, he was a member of two Massachusetts State Championship golf teams. The Fund is also thrilled to announce that Josh will be joining the Board of Directors, and we look forward to his further contributions to the growth of our organization.

T
he Richard F. Connolly Distinguished Service Award was established in 2000 in honor of Mr. Connolly, a Ouimet Scholarship Alumnus, former President, and current Board Member and Trustee who has proudly served the Ouimet Fund for over 45 years. For the past 4 decades, he has been Chair and Co-Chair of the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament. He has also underwritten the production of the Richard F. Connolly, Sr. Trophy, the Ouimet Memorial’s permanent trophy that is one of the most unique in golf. Mr. Connolly has been the driving force in starting the Francis Ouimet Lifelong Contributions to Golf Award Annual Banquets, and helping arrange the sponsorship of Morgan Stanley and other companies. He has also established an endowed Ouimet Scholarship in his family’s name and helped The Fund in many other ways. The Connolly Award is presented annually in his honor.
D
ennis J. (Denny) Kelly is a Ouimet Scholarship Alumnus, who was student speaker at our 1968 Banquet. At the time, he was an accomplished athlete, playing both basketball and football for his alma mater Williams College. He had caddied at Berkshire Hills Country Club and the Country Club of Pittsfield which gave him the necessary qualifications to earn a Ouimet scholarship. Denny went on to receive a J.D. from the Law School at Columbia University where he was also a graduate assistant coach of the football team. Denny started his legal career at Herrick & Smith in Boston. In the 1980s, Denny was an Assistant United States Attorney in the Major Frauds Unit of the Criminal Division, United States Attorney’s Office (Boston).

Denny has been a partner at Burns and Levinson for over 25 years. He has specialties in Business Denny Kelly '68 (right) stands with Dick Connolly '62, while accepting the 2018 award. Litigation, Government and Internal Investigations & White Collar Crime, and Securities Litigation. He has been on the Ouimet Board since 2002 serving as Clerk & Counsel and ex-officio director. In these roles, he and his firm have assisted the Ouimet Fund in a broad range of legal projects. Over the years he and B&L have worked on Ouimet’s Golf House lease, by-laws, governance, contracts, intellectual property and trademark agreements, the transfer of the Ouimet Memorial Tournament to Mass Golf, HR policies and more. He is truly a very dedicated Ouimet Alumnus who has been a critical member of the team. Denny appears in federal and state trial and appellate courts in Massachusetts and other federal districts in the United States and is a Fellow in the American College of Trial Lawyers. He has served on the Criminal Justice Act Panel for the District of Massachusetts, is Past Chairman of the Cambridge Police Review & Advisory Board, and a member of The Thomas J. Drinan Memorial Fellowship Committee. He and his wife Dr. Linda S. Aglio make their home in Cambridge with their daughter Nicole Kelly-Aglio.

Ouimet Chairs and Club Leadership
We thank the individual Ouimet Chairs who work tirelessly throughout the year to help maximize the partnership among their club, its members, and the Ouimet Fund. The Ouimet Chairs act as a conduit for all of the information flowing back and forth between the Club membership, the scholarship recipients and the Ouimet Fund. They work closely with the Golf Professional, Club Manager, Course Superintendent and the rest of the club leadership to help educate their fellow members on the impact that they are making, and all of the ways individuals can get involved. They also play a key role in recruiting and educating new Ouimet applicants, and many participate in the Scholarship Interview process.
Key Club Personnel
At each club, we have key people on staff, like general managers, superintendents, caddie masters, and head professionals who work closely with the Ouimet Chair and others from the club’s leadership to promote all the Ouimet programs. These are the people who will hire, train and mentor the young golf employees through college and beyond. We are thankful to have their help to identify and realize the great potential in these young people and guide them to the scholarship.
Bag Tag Program
The hardworking young men and women at your clubs make up the next generation of Ouimet Scholars, and future leaders.
The great tradition of the Ouimet Bag Tag has been in place since 1955, and has consistently been a major source of revenue for the Ouimet Fund. We currently have nearly 80 clubs committed to this annual program, all of which see the majority of their members not only support, but get behind the efforts of the Ouimet Chair in promoting the opportunity to potential scholars. Each member at all of our clubs receives a "Sponsor Tag" to show that they support the Ouimet Fund. Many clubs chose the option to get involved at a higher level by joining the “Ouimet 100” program, which started during the Centennial celebration, and increased the impact to $100 per member each spring.

The second edition of this biennial event took place at Charles River Country Club in May. The aim of the event is to bring together leaders from our supporting clubs, not only to thank them for all of their efforts in promoting The Fund’s many programs, but also to network and learn from each other’s experiences. Before we hit the first tee ball, Ouimet Vice President and Club Relations Chair Duncan Gratton thanked all who attended and commented on the vital role of the Ouimet Chair. He went on to introduce two of our top Ouimet Chairs: John Dolan of The Kittansett Club and Bill Hanlon of Marshfield Country Club. Each shared some of their success stories and gave tips to help others elevate their programs. This event has been a great tool in keeping these ambassadors of The Fund educated and as active participants in our programs.

Ouimet Chair of the Year Award

his annual award recognizes a person or people from a given club who have gone above and beyond in their duties as Ouimet Chair. They actively seek to engage and educate their fellow members on The Fund’s programs and impact, while ensuring all eligible young people from their club take advantage of the opportunity. The recipient (s) will have a long history of being an advocate for the Ouimet Fund and our mission at the club level, but also work to bring individuals to The Fund looking to get more involved and make a larger impact though Lifetime Membership, Annual Banquet Sponsorship, Endowed Scholarship creation or involvement in other Ouimet Fund programs.

he Ouimet Fund congratulates Kathy Guillard and Mike Walker of Cape Cod National Golf Club on their selection as 2018 Ouimet Chairs of the Year. Kathy, a member at Cape Cod National, and Mike, the general manager of Cape Cod National, work closely together in a very successful and supportive Ouimet program. Both Mrs. Guillard and Mr. Walker have represented The Fund at Cape Cod National for many years, and the program has become exemplary.
Cape Cod National is a relatively new club, but has one of the top caddie programs on Cape Cod with over 60 regular caddies. Mrs. Guillard takes great pride in encouraging the caddies to apply for the Ouimet Scholarship, and in 2018 the club has eleven students receiving Ouimet assistance. Cape Cod National caddies also wear bibs with the famed “Francis & Eddie” image prominently displayed. The Club is at the forefront of supporting the Ouimet Fund, with both a strong individual member donation program as well as its 2018 Ouimet Co-Chairs of the Year from Cape Cod National, Kathy Guillard and Mike Walker, Bag Tag program support. 2001 Carolyn & F. F
or the second year in a row, the Ouimet Fund was thrilled to host our Golf Marathon at Juniper Hill Golf Course, a beautiful and fun 36-hole layout. On a day that reached nearly 100 degrees, The Fund welcomed 44 all-volunteer participants and their "caddies" (cart drivers) just after sunrise, and play kicked off bright and early. Over 5,200 holes were played, all with the goal of raising as much money for Ouimet Scholarships as possible. And raise money they did; our Golf Marathon is the culmination of weeks of crowdfunding by our participants, and we are thrilled to report that the total surpassed $350,000!
The event was a huge success for The Fund, and one that could not be accomplished without the hard work of all 44 teams & participants. With that said, we would be remiss if we did not mention some of our top participants, which again feature dedicated members of the Ouimet community. Tedesco Country Club’s longtime Ouimet Chair (and Ouimet Alumnus) Michael Zmetrovich, ’90 and his son, Oliver '22, were the top fundraisers this year, and we thank them for many years of commitment to the Golf Marathon. Another consistent Marathon team, Wellesley Country Club, placed second in fundraising and more than doubled their total from 2017 – so thank you to Wellesley fundraiser Rick Spillane '78, and Marathoner Charlie Greenwood for making that happen! Marathon stalwart Matt Alwin and Dedham Country & Polo Club placed third, which is another great showing for a club and Marathoner who support this event year after year.
Event Enhancements & Growth
The day is really a golf festival, and acts as a culmination of roughly six weeks of fundraising either through your golf club, or by using an online platform like you’d see with other crowdfunding events. This year, we took the online aspect of the event to the next level by investing in a new and more efficient platform, which allowed participants to more easily share their challenge with colleagues, family and friends. Participants share their stories about why they want to make a difference in this fun and unique event, and the donations add up. With six new individual participants this year, we again heard that players love the laid-back nature of the event, the fact that normal golf rules are set aside for the day, and that they can spread out over 36 holes. Not to mention there is an abundance of food served all day, and prizes are given out to all participants. “It is impressive and encouraging to see a 26-year-old event continue to adapt and grow, but that is what we have with the Ouimet Golf Marathon,” said Jim Blue, Ouimet President. “Juniper Hill was again a terrific home for the event, and it played a part in allowing us to raise over $350,000 for Ouimet Scholarships. This will make a huge impact on our ability to award $2.2 Million in scholarships this year.” Three players tee off at once, as golf rules are set aside for the day in the interest of playing as many holes as possible!

Ouimet Scholars were thrilled to attend the 2018 Investing in Lifetimes Reception, alongside the generous Ouimet Fund donors.
Who is eligible?
• All candidates must have performed at least two years of service to golf at a golf course in Massachusetts: › Caddies › Course Superintendent Ops › Pro Shop Ops (Bag Room, Practice Range & Cart Storage Area) › “On-Course” Snack Shack
• The candidate must plan to be a full-time student at an accredited institution of undergraduate higher education • Students may apply as seniors in high school, or during their college career.
How do applicants begin?
• Requests for applications can be made at www.Ouimet.org/app or by contacting Director of Scholarships, Michelle Edwards at MichelleE@ouimet.org.
Who becomes a Ouimet Scholar?
Scholarship applicants are first judged across a wide range of categories on a “point scale.” These categories include academic achievement and leadership, school/community activities, the applicant interview with 4-5 Ouimet volunteers, essays, character and integrity, service to golf and the multiple recommendations received in the application. Applicants who then reach the required point threshold, which varies year to year based on the applicant class, are considered December 1 Ouimet Scholars. Subsequent years, to maintain this Application deadline status, Scholars need only reapply with a much simpler March/April “update form” and copy of their transcript indicating fullApplicant interviews time student status. June 30 Financial documents due September 15 Notification to applicants

How are monetary Ouimet Scholarships determined?
The certified financial need of the Ouimet Scholars is then analyzed through tuition costs, college grants and the estimated family contribution through the submitted CSS and FAFSA forms. Ouimet Scholarships are need-based and can be renewable for four years if a student maintains a full course-load and meets GPA requirements. Beginning in 2018, Honorary Scholars were awarded a nominal "Book Award" to assist with the expenses of college, and to show that their efforts in applying to be a Ouimet Scholar were appreciated. Honorary Scholars are invited to and included in all other Ouimet Scholar/Alumni activities.
Important info to note:
• The December 1st deadline is a hard deadline for students seeking Ouimet Scholar status/scholarship award the following year. There are no exceptions, so don't miss a year of eligibility by failing to submit all the necessary forms to the online application portal.

Endowed Scholarship Program

Ouimet Endowed Scholarship Brochure The Ouimet Fund has a special annual Endowed Brochure which showcases the endowed program. Endowed scholarships continue to expand and become an even more important part of our overall strategic growth. Endowed creators and donors take great pride in the publication which includes a description and photo of each endowed honoree along with a listing and photo of each annual recipient. The Brochure includes information about how these endowed awards can be established and we welcome inquiries about the program. For more information on each of these awards and the 2018 – 2019 recipients, please refer to our brochure, “Investing in Lifetimes,” which can be found at www.Ouimet.org/endowed.
he Ouimet Fund has a full range of permanently endowed scholarships. Each of these awards has been funded by contributions from individuals, groups or families and is named after an individual or organization who is or was deeply committed to golf and the importance of higher education. Each year, recipients of the Endowed Ouimet Scholarships receive additional “surprise” funds in the middle of their fall semester above and beyond their fall/spring award. Students are also able to personally thank the endowed donor in a number of ways and the donor receives an annual report on the status of their investment as well as the success of the Scholar they are investing in. Listed on the following pages are the 148 Ouimet Endowed Scholarships, including newly created ones through September 2018. The total funds in the Ouimet Endowed program currently surpasses $16 Million. This is a very important piece of the scholarship pie, as it accounts for approximately 38% of total scholarship dollars awarded each year. Endowed Scholarships, which are created with a commitment of at least $50,000, may be funded over 1-5 years. The program offers the donor the ability to tailor their gift and the resulting named award to suit their philanthropic goals. Upon reaching the minimum balance, a 5% draw on the principal is made each year toward scholarships. The additional awards are made to the selected student and there is an opportunity for the donors and recipients to meet at our annual Investing in Lifetimes Reception. he Fund hosted its 16th Annual Investing in Lifetimes Reception on June 19th at Wellesley Country Club. Over 190 Scholars, Alumni & endowed scholarship creators gathered to celebrate this great program. This is one of the more special events of the year, as supporters can meet face to face with the students they support.

This year’s speaker was Rand Alexander, an endowed scholarship creator and longtime supporter of The Fund. He and his wife, Cheryl, firmly believe that access to education provides access to opportunity, and thus have created two scholarships to specifically support employees at public golf courses and inner-city Scholars. The Fund was also thrilled to feature the creation of a new scholarship, the Gerald F. Corcoran Scholarship. Michael Corcoran spoke about what golf and education have meant to his family over the years, beginning with his father and now his son. We look forward to an even bigger crowd in 2019!

he Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund renamed its “Honorary Alumnus Award” after Denny Goodrich when he retired from the Ouimet Fund’s Board of Directors in 2009 after 37 years of service. Mr. Goodrich, of Dedham Country and Polo Club, was the inaugural recipient of the award in 2003 and also the Ouimet Fund’s Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award’s awardee in its debut year of 2000. For 13 years, he served as the Vice Chair of the Ouimet Fund’s Annual Banquets. He was Ouimet President from 1990-1992. Denny is the epitome of a Ouimet Alumnus, and this is a very small way to always remember his immense contributions to The Fund.

he Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund’s Alumni Committee awarded its 2018 Denny Goodrich Ouimet Honorary Alumnus Award to Jeff Marques, the Vice President of Mallard Printing. Mr. Marques and Mallard Printing have had a long and very productive association with the Ouimet Fund. Mallard Printing, based in Fall River, MA, has been the principal printer, graphic designer and mail house for the Ouimet Fund since 2001. Jeff and his team have partnered on a very wide range of Ouimet projects including the Annual Impact Report, Annual Endowed Scholarship brochure, Annual Banquet program book, newsletters, annual appeals, gift items, numerous event invitations, mailing projects, and much more.

The “Honorary Alumnus” designation seeks to acknowledge that there are many people who have been important to the Ouimet Fund and/or the game that either did not need assistance or did not apply for assistance when they went to college. The “service to golf” or great involvement with the game could be as a volunteer, as their career, or possibly as a competitor. The candidate must have been generous in their support of the Ouimet Fund, either by contributing financially, by volunteer and/or exceptional professional service.

Ouimet Continues Support of Inner-City Programs
The Fund continued its support of the Green Hill Caddie Program for a third straight year.
Third Year Brings Changes, Growth to Green Hill Program
The Ouimet Fund was proud to continue growing its inner-city Scholar initiative by assisting the Caddie Project at Worcester’s Green Hill Golf Course for a third straight year. “We will continue to focus on increasing our inner-city Scholar participation, and we see the Green Hill program as a great way to start young people in caddying, while also developing a path to eventually becoming Ouimet Scholars,” said Ouimet Fund President Jim Blue. For a third straight year, people within the Ouimet Fund, including staff, Bill Kelleher and Jack McDaniel worked to push the Green Hill program to grow, while focusing on effectiveness and efficiency. With the daily work of Matthew Moison, and more specifically new caddie master Fitzgerald Pucci '18, the program showed a third straight year of promise. Fourteen young men and women were involved on a weekly basis at Green Hill this year, some of whom had never been on a golf course before. They learned the ins and outs of golf, caddying, course maintenance, and had weekly life skills lessons. Ouimet Alumnus Fitzgerald Pucci, a recent graduate of UMass-Amherst, excelled in his first year as Caddie Master, and was instrumental in these caddie training sessions, as well as acting as the contact between Green Hill, the Ouimet Fund, and the local Worcester area partners. Messrs. Moison, Brent, Kelleher and McDaniel are excited about the prospects of the program into 2019 and beyond.
Boston Golf Management Program Remains Strong
The Ouimet Fund is proud to celebrate its 21st year of awarding scholarships to inner-city graduates of the City of Boston Golf Management Program at Franklin Park and George Wright Golf Courses. Ouimet staff, including Director of Scholarships Michelle Edwards and Executive Director Bob Donovan, visited with prospective students and their parents at a dinner at George Wright. The goal of the dinner was to encourage the kids to take advantage of their eligibility, and apply for a Ouimet scholarship. The Golf Management Summer Program is open to high school students from Boston and its neighborhoods (Dorchester, Jamaica Plain, Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale, Roxbury, etc). Over 138 Boston students have benefited from this program, and have received over $1.4 Million in Ouimet scholarships.

The 16th Annual Dale Carnegie Course offered another life-changing experience for 23 Ouimet Scholars.
T
here are other ways that supporters of The Fund are making an impact on the lives of our Ouimet Scholars by offering participatory programs to them each year. Here’s a look at two of these opportunities in 2018:
Scholars Caddie in Dell Technologies Championship
The Ouimet Fund, in association with the PGA TOUR, once again provided caddies for the Dell Technologies Championship Pro-Am in August. Scholars and Alumni were able to experience something very few have, which is what it feels like to walk the fairways during a PGA TOUR event. Ouimet caddies were able to work in the same group with the likes of Henrik Stenson, Tommy Fleetwood, Jordan Spieth, and dozens of other top players. We want to thank the PGA TOUR, and especially the staff of the Dell Technologies Championship, for allowing us to be a part of this great event for 15 years, and we look forward to the future of professional golf here in the Boston area.
Dale Carnegie
The 16th Annual Ouimet Dale Carnegie “Generation Next – Effective Leadership and Brian Oates '93 (right) enjoyed caddie and fellow Alumnus Trevor Larrubia '15 on the bag at the Dell Communications” course was held at Bentley University throughout the summer and Technologies Pro-Am. was, as we have come to expect from the great Dale Carnegie program, a huge success. Twenty-three Ouimet Scholars were able to benefit from this program, free of charge. The course at Bentley was again generously contributed by John MacKinnon, President of Performance Training, and coordinator of Dale Carnegie Training in the Boston area. Mr. MacKinnon, a Director and Ouimet Society Lifetime Member from Charles River Country Club, developed the eight-week program and donates free admission to Ouimet Scholars. Each year, graduates of the course rave about it and report that it was one of the most important they have ever taken. We are delighted that over 320 Ouimet Scholars have received this great benefit over the years. The Fund wishes to thank Mr. MacKinnon for his dedication to providing our Scholars with this excellent program, and would also like to deeply thank Terry Carleton of Bentley University for contributing the meeting space.

Ouimet Outings Bring Supporters Together

e were fortunate to be at three of our top supporting clubs in 2018, and had successful days of golf and networking in support of The Fund. At each outing, we host a variety of participants, from Banquet sponsors, to Ouimet Lifetime Members, to Endowed Scholarship creators, and more. Close friends of The Fund like Board Members, Ouimet Chairs, and Alumni also regularly attend, which allows us to have a close knit, but growing, community. The outings are a great way for longtime supporters to come together, as well as introduce new Friends of the Fund and show them who we are and what we do. Ouimet Fund Outing – Vesper Country Club
The first outing of the year kicked off the summer season at beautiful Vesper Country Club in Tyngsboro. Thanks to our hosts: PGA Professional Steven Doyle, Club Manager Bob Pescatore, Ouimet Chair Ken Hughes, and the entire Vesper membership for welcoming us to their challenging Donald Ross facility. The team best able to navigate the tricky greens and sloping fairways was not surprisingly from the host club, as local knowledge played a big part. Ken Hughes, Les Devitt, Danny Brown and Eric Roy '22, shot an impressive gross score of 66. Congratulations as well to our net winners Matt Connell, Jack Nicolas '82, Mark Young and Steve Shay, who shot 59 to have their names etched on the William Ellison Trophy. Although the food, service and golf course conditions were all incredible, one of the real highlights of the day was hearing from student speaker, Nick Cohan '18. Nick, a recent graduate of UMass Lowell, shared his story of what working in golf and the scholarship meant to him, and also how important it is that he gives back. Nick is already active in many Ouimet programs and has done the Golf Marathon representing Long Meadow Golf Club.
Ouimet Fund Fall Pro-Am Outing – Winchester Country Club
We had a full field on October 1st at legendary Winchester Country Club for the Ouimet Fund Pro-Am. For this annual event, we head to one of our top clubs, and groups are paired with an NEPGA Professional from one of the many supporting clubs across the state. A special thank you goes out to all the PGA Professionals who do so much for our scholars, but also the twenty-four Pros who came out to make it a great day at Winchester! Ouimet Scholar and Senior at Northeastern University Carli Citrano '18 thanks the crowd at Winchester Country Club.
Following golf, the second annual Ouimet Professional of the Year was awarded to John Fields, PGA of Belmont Country Club. John was recognized for his exemplary efforts in promoting the Ouimet

scholarship opportunity to the kids working at his club, and also the importance of the donation programs to his membership. (More details on John Fields and the award on page 32.) Along with hearing from John, players had the opportunity to hear from Carli Citrano '19, one of our current Scholars from Bear Hill Golf Club, who is a Nursing Student at Boston University. Prior to the award presentation, some great golf was seen on a pristine and challenging golf course. Winning low gross was the team of Todd Wetzel, Pete Askew '07, Rob Edgerton, Ricky Stimets and Jay Askew '04, (GM & Director of Golf at The Ridge Club). The low net team was Dave O'Donnell, Chris Provo, Colin McGuire '03, Charlie Eppinger and Jeff Monteleone (Head Professional at Bellevue Golf Club). Taking the low Professional honors for the day was Suel-Ki Park, Assistant PGA Professional at Winchester Country Club. Our sincere appreciation goes to the entire Winchester membership and staff, including Ouimet Chair Brian Gaffey, PGA Golf Professional Jim Salinetti, and GM Paul Lazar. Thank you!

Ouimet Annual Meeting & Outing – Cohasset Club
We had another great turnout for The Fund’s 2018 Annual Meeting and Golf Outing, which was graciously hosted by Cohasset Golf Club. We were treated to a special day, including incredible golf course conditions, paired with superior food and service in the clubhouse. While the golf course proved challenging, there were some impressive scores posted from our net winners Jim Moriarty ’77, Kevin MacLaughlan ’93, Sean Moriarty ’06, and Jason Howarth ’05, and our gross winners Jason Devito, Jeff Murphy ’04, Andrew Newman '02, and Sarah Newman. Following a great day of golf, attendees had the opportunity to hear from Joseph Cincotta ’19, a current Ouimet Scholar from Bryant University, who impressed the crowd by discussing the enormous impact the Ouimet Scholarship has had on his life. Joe mentioned that he would not be able to attend Bryant without the Ouimet aid, and that he hopes to someday be able to give back as others have before him. Later, the Honorary Ouimet Scholar Award was presented to Jeff Marques of Mallard Printing, who has been a phenomenal partner to the Ouimet Fund for over 15 years and has given back to The Fund in so many ways. Thanks again to host Ouimet Chairs Emmett O’Brien and Jack Henesey, along with Head Professional Bryan Kienke and GM Jim Simmons, and of course the Cohasset membership for welcoming us to their beautiful facility.

he Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund presented its 2nd Annual Ouimet Golf Professional of the Year Award to Belmont Country Club’s Director of Golf, John Fields at the Ouimet outing at Winchester Country Club on October 1st. This annual award recognizes a New England PGA Professional for his or her efforts and achievements in guiding the young men and women who work for them to the Francis Ouimet scholarship, and their ongoing mentoring through college and beyond. The recipient is someone who works closely with The Fund and plays an important role in promoting both the scholarship to kids and their parents, and the various Ouimet programs to the club membership. John is a perfect example of all the above. In addition to representing the New England PGA on the Ouimet Board of Directors, he has had a long history of promoting the scholarship to kids at Belmont Country Club. John has a deep personal connection with The Fund, as his three children have gone through the Ouimet scholarship process, two of whom are members of the Alumni community and one who is a current Scholar. He has helped “Watching the young encourage dozens of other young people from Belmont Country Club to apply and men and women go receive the scholarship, which has translated to thousands of dollars in scholarships for these young men and women. Outside Events Fenway Shootout The Fund was delighted to be a part of the inaugural Dell Technologies Championship Charity Shootout. This unique event took place at famed Fenway Park, and featured eight local charities, each competing for the top prize of $25,000. Each team was allowed to bring two players, one who worked closely with the organization and the other a celebrity media member. The Ouimet Fund’s team was made up of Jim Moriarty '77, a Ouimet Director and Alumnus, and Tom E. Curran of NBC Sports Boston. Each player was given two shots, which were hit from behind home plate aimed out at center field, where a turf mat acted as the green. The weather could not have been better, and the Dell Technologies Tom E. Curran (left) of NBC Sports Boston was the media celebrity for The Championship put on stellar pre- and post-event receptions. Moriarty Fund, and Jim Moriarty '77 (right) represented the Board of Directors from the Ouimet Fund. Fund Executive Director Bob Donovan (center) and Curran both hit great shots, but unfortunately they came up was in attendance to support the team. just shy of the top prize. We want to thank the Dell Technologies Championship for their invitation and hospitality, and we are excited about the future of professional golf in Massachusetts.
Alumnus Bob Beach '75 Celebrated

The first week of June was declared “Bob Beach Week” in the Town of Braintree. After 27 years as the Head Professional of Braintree Golf Course, Ouimet Alumnus Bob Beach '75 retired and was recognized at several special events. Following a plaque dedication at the course, a golf tournament and dinner was held to celebrate his tremendous impact over the years. Bob has led countless programs to bring opportunities to those with special needs, our nation’s veterans, young people starting out playing and working in the game and the community at large. In 2017, Dan McLaughlin created the Campbell-Beach endowed scholarship at the Ouimet Fund to honor Ken Campbell, Bob Beach and their families for the positive impact they have had on so many. Bob asked that proceeds of the week’s event be directed to that scholarship at the Ouimet Fund to help future Ouimet Scholars. Bob was a Ouimet Scholar from Oakley CC when he attended Norwich University, is married to Ouimet Alumna Cathleen Beach, and their two children, John and Annie, are Ouimet Alumni. As was said many times that week, Bob Beach never seeks credit for all the selfless things he does, but he deserves all that he receives.

Ouimet Fund Memorial Donations

isted below are memorial donations The Fund has received. The Ouimet Fund has a full memorial donations program, which remembers people who have had golf as a favored pastime in their lives. Included in this list are several longtime Ouimet supporters who died within the past year and ongoing gifts that remember people who passed away previously.
The Ouimet Fund Sadly Loses Close Friends, a President and three Trustees Barbara McLean and her sister Janice Salvi (Francis Ouimet’s only children) died within a few weeks of each other this past summer. Barbara and Jane had been regular attendees at the Ouimet Banquet, as well as other events, and were great links to the history of the family and The Fund. Ray Lajoie spent 47 years at Worcester Country Club, including many years as head professional. He was tremendously dedicated to the storied caddie program at Worcester CC, which has roughly 100 regular caddies. Several today are grandchildren of caddies who started under Ray in the 1950’s. Mr. Lajoie encouraged many of them to apply for the Ouimet Scholarship and was a great representative for The Fund, and an honorary Trustee. William C. “Bill” Foley was a Francis Ouimet Scholarship Alumnus (Boston College ’59), former Ouimet Fund President, and former Mass Golf President. He was a very fine player and was the MGA Amateur Champion in 1964, and the Eddie Lowery (Senior Division) Champion of the Ouimet Memorial Tournament in 2000. He was also greatly honored for his contributions to golf, including receiving The Fund’s Richard F. Connolly, Jr. Distinguished Service Award in 2003.
Richard “Dick” Foley was a long-time MGA Official and greatly known as Associate Chairman of the Francis Ouimet Memorial Tournament from 1980-2011. Mr. Foley worked alongside close friend Dick Connolly, who has been Ouimet Memorial Chair since 1979. Mr. Foley was recognized for his many years of Ouimet service with the Denny Goodrich Honorary Ouimet Alumnus Award in 2004. Dixon Sykes of Weston Golf Club was a Ouimet Fund Trustee and longtime supporter. He was greatly respected for his many roles in Massachusetts golf and the USGA. He had been Mass Golf President in 1979-80. He was a highly regarded golf official, and member of the USGA Rules Committee. He officiated many national championships and often was assigned a key group at the U.S. Open.
