Kota Kinabalu International Airport

Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) (IATA: BKI, ICAO: WBKK) serves the city of Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of Sabah, Malaysia. KKIA is located approximately 8 km from the Kota Kinabalu city center, the state capital of Sabah, and it is the main gateway into the state of Sabah and into Borneo.

This airport first began as a military airfield built by the Japanese occupying forces during World-War II. Back then, it was also known as the Jesselton Airfield. Post independence in 1957, the airport has gone through various phases of upgrade and today, it is the second busiest airport in Malaysia after Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

The Departure Hall column head design is inspired by the ‘Wakid’ basket design. A ‘Wakid’ is a symbolic native practice in preparing for a meaningful journey. Some ethnic pattern of the Rungus and Bajau were also applied in the floor tiles pattern. The new terminal has also been configured with 12 aerobridges. Commercial activities are offered via duty free shops, retail outlets and food & beverage outlets. In 2006, approximately 2 million tourists visited Sabah through this airport, making it one of Malaysia s fastest growing regional international airports.

There are more than 10 airlines operating in KKIA (including charters and seasonal). To name but a few are AirAsia, Asiana Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Dragonair, Eastar Jet, Korean Air, Malaysia Airlines and Royal Brunei Airlines.
