In the middle of a war between two kingdoms queen died tragically while giving birth to her third daughter. The king wanted a male heir to his throne and torn by the death of his wife, decides to sacrifice the girl and leads to the Cave of the Golden Rose to give her to the monster. The child is saved by the White Witch who promises her a wonderful future. With a rebellious temperament, the princess, named by his father Fantaghiro behaves like a tomboy. But one day she must confront the enemy, the king Romualdo, which is in love with her.

Being an italian family-friendly fantasy movie "The Cave of the Golden Rose" naturally contains child murder, offering of humans, transsexuality (or maybe it is better put as intersexuality?), a shot of a vagina and Mario Adorf.
It is also a charming movie in which the quality of the story is sadly only seldom brought to live by the not-so-great execution. The book might be of more interest - highlights in the movie itself are the white knight and the grown-up Fantagihro.

No, not really. It is still awful. But it is part of the roots of Italian culture. If you want to impress an italian girl, tell her that she is as fierce and persona bella as Fantaghirò

fantaghirò exerts a weird antispecist stance, calling not to kill animals (except if they serve as food) and *SPOILER* freeing all the geese in her kingdom. kudos to lamberto bava and his writing team for taking a couple-page folktale and turning it into a competent miniseries, special to spend a hangover sunday in bed. bava even has the nerve of incorporating a sequence in a lovecraftian cave more akin to the yuzna/screming mad george canon than to a fairy movie

I did enjoy the material that serves as the foundation for the film, but I wasn't fond of the execution. This is the first of five movies made for tv; unfortunately, it shows, particularly with cheap-looking cinematography. The performances didn't help either, a very mixed affair and came across too theatrical.
I might give the second film a shot because I was at least invested in the basic storyline and I want to see what happens next, but I doubt I'll see all five of them.
