Tata Nano rumored to make a comeback with electric drive

    Synopsis

Tata Nano is expected to come back with an electric drive mechanism, along with changes to the platform, exteriors, suspension and tyres.

    Tata Nano EV
Tata, the largest electric carmaker in India, might consider bringing back Tata Nano, discontinued years back. The homegrown car brand currently offers electric passenger cars such as Nexon EV, Tiago EV, and Tigor EV in the Indian market.
What does the latest report suggest about Tata Nano's comeback?

As per the latest report circulating in the media, Tata might be planning to re-introduce the Nano hatchback with an electric drive. There could be significant changes to the underpinnings, exteriors, interiors, tyres, and suspension setup.

Moreover, Tata could be in talks with the Tamil Nadu government to acquire Ford's Maraimalai Nagar manufacturing facility if the plan for the Nano EV launch reaches the production phase. However, news of the Tata Nano EV has been hovering around for quite a while.

The Tata Nano was discontinued in 2020, along with Tata Safari Storme SUV, as soon as the BS6 norms came into effect. At the time of its launch, Tata Nano was hyped as the cheapest car in the world. However, it failed to appeal to the masses in the long run, with quality and safety being some of the core reasons for the sales decline.

Tata Nano came with the 624cc twin-cylinder petrol motor, which produced 38PS and 51Nm torque, paired to a 4-speed manual or AMT gearbox.
