Las Pozas – The Surrealist Gardens of Edward James

Xilitla, Mexico

Found in a subtropical rainforest in the mountains of Mexico, Las Pozas is a group of structures created by The British surrealist art patron, Edward James.

James, who sponsored Salvador Dali and worked with René Magritte among others during the 30s, decided that he wanted a “Garden of Eden set up” and between 1949 and 1984 when he died, built his surrealist garden.

Las Pozas (The Pools), include more than 80 acres of natural waterfalls and pools, interlaced with towering Surrealist concrete sculptures, some as high as 4 stories.

Long after James’ death, Las Pozas, which had cost $5 million to build, were bought and restored by the government of San Luis Potosí, the company Cemex and the Fundación Pedro y Elena Hernandez.
