Regions where consumption of raw or undercooked meat is common also tend to have higher rates of tapeworm infections.

According to a recent study, tapeworm disease is quite prevalent in low- and middle-income countries, including Pakistan. The results showed that nearly 21.2% of the participants were infected with one or more intestinal tapeworms. Moreover, children under the age of 15 were the most affected. Males, especially if they were shepherds or farmers, were more prone to being infected compared to others in the population<a href="#accordion">[1]</a>.

Several types of tapeworms that can infect humans are named after the intermediate host they inhibit, such as the following<a href="#accordion">[2]</a>:

	<li>Taenia Saginata (Beef Tapeworm): Acquired through consuming undercooked or raw beef. Prevalence rates are significant in regions of Southern and Eastern Africa.

	<li>Taenia Solium (Pork Tapeworm): Acquired through consuming undercooked or raw pork. It can lead to both intestinal and extraintestinal infections. Prevalence is notable in parts of Asia (including Pakistan, India, and China), Latin America, East Europe, and Africa. 
	In addition to intestinal infection, this tapeworm can also lead to cysticercosis, a condition in which the larvae migrate to various tissues, causing cysts. This can have serious health implications. 
	&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Diphyllobothrium Latum (Fish Tapeworm): Acquired through consuming raw or undercooked freshwater fish. Certain parts of Asia, Europe, and North America may see higher prevalence rates of this infection. 
	This type of infection can lead to deficiencies in vitamin B12 and <a href="https://merisehat.pk/disease/anemia">anemia </a>due to the tapeworm&#39;s ability to absorb this vitamin in the intestines. 
	&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Hydatid Tapeworms: Echinococcus granulosus and Echinococcus multilocularis cause hydatid cyst disease and can be transmitted through contact with infected dogs, cattle, goats, sheep, and pigs. 
	&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Hymenolepis Nana (Dwarf Tapeworm): This tapeworm is one of the smallest human tapeworms and can cause infections when humans ingest contaminated food or water. Hymenolepis nana infections are often more common in areas with poor sanitation. 
	&nbsp;</li>

Sign and Symptoms

The tapeworm life cycle involves different stages, including egg, larval, and adult stages. Once ingested, tapeworm eggs or larvae can hatch in the intestines, and the larvae can then migrate to various parts of the body.

Tapeworms are parasitic in nature, i.e., they attach themselves to the inner lining of the intestines and absorb nutrients from the host&#39;s digested food.

The severity of the infection and the associated symptoms can vary based on the specific type of tapeworm involved and the extent of the infestation.

Symptoms may include:

These medications are effective at killing the tapeworm and allowing the body to pass it. In some cases, a doctor may need to remove the tapeworm manually.

The treatment of tapeworm infections in humans typically involves the use of prescription medication.

	<li>Praziquantel (PZQ): This is one of the most commonly used medications since it is effective against a variety of tapeworm species. Praziquantel works by causing muscle spasms in the tapeworm, leading to its detachment from the intestinal wall and subsequent expulsion from the body through bowel movements. It&#39;s usually taken as a single dose. 
	&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Albendazole (ALB): This works by interfering with the tapeworm&#39;s ability to absorb nutrients, eventually causing its death. Albendazole is often taken as a single dose or over the course of several days. 
	&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Niclosamide (NICL): This medication is used primarily to treat infections with fish tapeworms. It works by disrupting the tapeworm&#39;s energy metabolism and preventing its ability to attach to the intestines. Niclosamide is taken as a single dose. 
	&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Supportive Treatment: In addition to anthelmintic medications, these medications may be provided to relieve symptoms such as nausea and abdominal discomfort and maintain dehydration. 
	&nbsp;</li>

According to a meta-analysis reviewing the efficacy of these drugs, a single dose of PZQ (10 mg/kg) cured 99.5% of individuals with pork tapeworms, whereas ALB (400 mg/day for 3 consecutive days) had a success rate of 96.4% and NICL (2 g) had an 84.3% success rate. Most of the studies had no or mild side effects after the administration of the drugs<a href="#accordion">[3]</a>.

In some instances, if the tapeworm infection has led to complications like cyst formation or blockages in the gastrointestinal tract, drainage or surgical options may be considered.

	<li>Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may develop allergic reactions to tapeworm antigens or their waste products. This can lead to skin rashes, hives, itching, and other allergic symptoms.

In particular, pork tapeworms cause 30-70% of epilepsy cases worldwide. According to the World Health Organization, the majority of these cases are reported from low-income, subsistence farming communities<a href="#accordion">[5]</a>.
