Commiphora myrrha is very spiny and it grows to a height of about 4 m (13 ft). It grows at an altitude of between about 250 to 1,300 m (820 to 4,270 ft) with a yearly mean rainfall of about 23 to 30 cm (9.1 to 11.8 in). It does best in thin soil, primarily in areas with limestone
Chemically, Myrrh is composed of essential oil, water-soluble gum and alcohol-soluble resin (El Ashry et al. 2003). Myrrh has been widely employed as a common analgesic and in cleaning wounds and sores for more than 2000 years, until the discovery of morphine (Dolara et al. 1996).
Plants prefer a minimum temperature that does not fall below about 10°c[ 238 ]. It grows wild in areas where the mean annual rainfall is within the range 230 - 300mm
Keep in mind that you should never swallow myrrh oral-care products, as high doses of myrrh can be toxic (15). Additionally, if you have oral surgery, it may be best to avoid myrrh mouthwash during healing. Myrrh is a sweet-smelling tree sap which at times in the past has been more valuable than gold. The myrrh tree, Commiphora myrrha, is native to Oman, Yemen, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya. It is very spiny and will grow to about 13 feet high. In the 1st century AD, Arabia produced about 448 tons of myrrh each year.
