Character analysis: Lau

-Lau is the most laidback character of Kuroshitsuji. It could be the influence of the drugs, or that he really is optimistic or opiumistic. Jokes aside, he seems to be someone who is confident in himself and his abilities, and that’s why he takes life so easily. But, beneath  this funny, laidback and confident obviousness, lies a person with a intense personality. It’s true that he has many secrets, as just like any other person who works in the underworld, but I don’t think that his secrets involve only hiding his crimes. Ran Mao is a mystery to us, and not only because we don’t know much about her. Knowing Kuroshitsuji’s nature, we can most-likely-correctly assume that Lau’s biggest secret is Ran. She’s enigmatic, and many even think she is not human. It’s not impossible for her to be a creature of underworld, for example a demon or a vampire. I like the latter theory the most, and because it’s very interesting. Imagine Lau, an underworld dealer, having a vampire, who is also his lover, by his side. It’d make quite a manga, I’d say.

-When it comes to his name’s origin, it seems that Lau is a common last name, and the author could have either  chosen this name based on its meaning or based on someone who has had this name. We have Hans E. Lau, a danish astronomer, who lived during the Victorian times, and Jean Marie du Lau, who was the Archbishop of Arles. He lived in the 18th century. But, the most interesting and plausible theory is that Lau’s name could be based on Lau clan. From what I’ve discovered, Lau clan is one of the seven Mohyal clans of Punjab. They are known for their martial tradition, and we know that Lau is really good at them.

-I’d like to know why Lau is interested in Ciel? Could it be that he wants to be on the good side of Queen’s Watchdog, or maybe there is something more? He did say to Ciel that he expects amusing things from him. Maybe, it’s really interesting for him that such a young boy is carrying out all these duties.

Interesting

Or, is it possible that he knows about Sebastian’s true nature, and that’s why he acted that way during the Sebastian’s ‘magic trick?’ He could have killed him if he wasn’t a human, and I’m sure that Lau is not that reckless. He could know that because of Ran Mao, maybe? I think it would be interesting in the end to find out that the majority of characters knew about Sebastian’s nature, but didn’t say anything.

I also wanted to talk about his tattoo. The only time we see it, it’s in the cover of volume 9.

Lau

It’s seems like a tail of something? Could it be a dragon? In Vedic Astrology, but also the Western astrology use it, Ketu is known as the tail of the dragon, while Rahu is the head of the dragon. They are also known as the North and South node, and astronomically they are the points of intersection of the paths of Moon and Sun. Ketu is also known as the tail of the Demon Snake. Ketu means many things, but among them are intelligence and psychic abilities, past lives, ability to heal from snakebites or poison in general.  We know that Lau has a needle that can be even used to kill with himself all the time.Needle.jpg

-Ketu also means detachment, spiritual enlightenment, not being very attached to this world, and Lau is someone who is quite relaxed and passionate about drugs, and being in his own very relaxed world.

-We haven’t seen much of him lately, since the Public School arc. Lau is an interesting character, who is known to go with the flow. He’s quite clever and his life is  still mysterious to us. But still he’s not as mysterious as Undertaker, who will be the next character I’ll talk about.

P.S. The scanlations do not translate this scene well, and I want to clear this out. Sleeping tiger

-So, he either  sleeps during New Year Parties’, or because of his appearance, he looks like he’s always sleeping. According to my experience with manga, the guy who are drawn like this are usually funny and cunning, but when they open their eyes something bad happens. After saying that people call him that, and that he’s going to demonstrate that, he ends the joke with a ‘fool on the futon.’ Futon is a Japanese bed, so according to this, he ends the joke with saying that he doesn’t know what to do in bed?  I bet there’s a pun here, we don’t know about, so can anyone who knows Japanese tell us?
