Mark Twain once quipped, “Age is a case of mind over matter. If you don’t mind it, it doesn’t matter.” When it comes to Martin Scorsese, age certainly isn’t making a difference. Octogenarian Scott’s 2023 was relatively similar to fellow filmmaker Martin Scorsese’s. Like “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Scott’s big-budget “Napoleon” biopic, released in November through Sony Pictures, is also an Apple production that will stream on its respective streaming service at a later date. Critics and audiences alike were mixed, but the R-rated spectacle still came in No. 2 at the extended Thanksgiving box office, behind the bigger “Hunger Games” prequel, an optimistic sign that a long-awaited sequel to “Gladiator,” due in 2024 from Scott and Paramount, has potential to seize more of the box office in a year that will see diminished presence from the usual Marvel tentpoles. As for his prodco, Scott Free is busy as ever, kicking 2023 off with Netflix’s “Kaleidoscope” series, films “Boston Strangler” and “A Haunting in Venice” for Hulu and 20th Century, respectively, as well as a new “Alien” movie alongside that IP’s first TV series, both of which are due in 2024. A “Blade Runner” series is also set up at Amazon.
