Nik Aziz gets Valentine’s Day message in Melbourne

A Malaysian living in Melbourne, Australia took advantage of a Valentine’s Day campaign by a local telco to honour recently deceased PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat through an electronic billboard in the city.

The message ‘Melbourne Loves TGNA’ was displayed on the 26 metre billboard on telco Telstra’s building at Bourke Street on Feb 14.

TGNA refers to ‘Tuan Guru Nik Aziz’ an honorific the veteran politician was given by supporters.

The company allows the public to display declarations of love on the billboard every Valentine’s Day by sending text messages to the company.

“People always send declarations of love on Valentine’s Day but my friends and I chose to use this day to show our love for tuan guru Nik Aziz,” the Malaysian student who declined to be named told Malaysiakini.

Tuan Guru Dato’ Bentara Setia Haji Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat (10 January 1931 – 12 February 2015) was a Malaysian politician and Muslim cleric. He was the Menteri Besar of Kelantan from 1990 to 2013 and the Mursyidul Am or Spiritual Leader of the Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS) from 1991 until his death in 2015. Overall, his career as an elected politician lasted for some 48 years following his election to the Parliament of Malaysia in 1967.

Learning from Tok Guru — Francis Loh

MARCH 6 — Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat, affectionately known as Tok Guru, was spiritual leader of PAS and mentri besar of Kelantan for 23 years.

He was well known for his piousness, humility, honesty and incorruptibility. In this regard, he was different from many other Malaysian political leaders who were arrogant, vain, power-crazy and prone to money politics.

Tok Guru extolled the virtues of Islam, preached and introduced Islamic governance, and founded a prominent religious boarding school, Maahad Darul Anuar. Respect for him, however, extends beyond Muslims and the people of Kelantan, for he was much respected by Malaysians, including non-Muslims, throughout the nation.

Many people close to him have extolled his praiseworthy ways including his contributions to his party PAS and to the Islamic cause. I want to highlight only three non-religious aspects of his legacy to share why I think we find Tok Guru so endearing to our multi-ethnic multi-religious society.

And the idiot of the year goes to… Ibrahim Katak Ali.

Ibrahim Ali incurs wrath of netizens over remarks on Nik Aziz

PETALING JAYA: Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali angered netizens on Friday after he appeared to criticise late PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat.

In a statement on Friday offering his condolences to Nik Aziz’s family, Ibrahim accused the former Kelantan Mentri Besar of failing to develop the state and falling short in his bid to implement hudud in the state.

“Many Kelantanese look up to him because he is considered an ulama and called Tok Guru (teacher) although he did not really develop Kelantan.

“The progress of Islam in Kelantan has gone nowhere and even hudud has failed to be implemented although he was the MB for more than 20 years,” the former Pasir Mas MP wrote on his Facebook page.

The original posting has since been removed, but not before social media users tore into Ibrahim for being insensitive.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 11 — Word of Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat’s death from heart complications this evening was shortlived with the PAS spiritual leader’s social media administrators rubbishing the rumour as false.

The rumour that started to circulate on Whatsapp group chats alleged that the former Kelantan Mentri Besar had died due to heart complications at the state’s Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia.

But the 83-year-old’s Twitter account administrator just minutes ago posted on Nik Aziz’s Twitter account, @nikabdulaziz, saying the rumour was “not true”.

“Rumours that said YB Tuan Guru Nik Abdul Aziz has passed away due to heart complications in social media now is not true, and is defamation spread by irresponsible quarters,” the Malay-language post which is linked to the senior PAS leader’s Facebook account said.

At the time of writing, the Facebook post has received 823 ‘likes’ by Facebook users.

When contacted, PAS central committee member Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad also confirmed that the rumour was false, telling Malay Mail Online in a brief text message: “Nope….Thank God.”

PETALING JAYA: A student from Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) was fined by university authorities for illegal parking and having a picture of PAS spiritual leader Datuk Nik Aziz Nik Mat pasted on the student’s car.

A picture of a clamped car with a ticket made rounds through social media after being posted on Nik Aziz’s Facebook page, drawing in more than 10,500 likes and 1,400 shares a mere two hours into its publishing Thursday morning.

User comments mostly condemned the university authorities for stifling the student’s right to political expression.

The offences listed on the summons reads, “Parking in an illegal area” and “Using a sticker of Tuan Guru Nik Aziz – Politics/PAS”.

The incident was believed to have taken place in the Sri Iskandar campus, Perak.

Living legend

Friends and foes will agree that Nik Aziz is a living legend in Malaysian politics.

After all, ensuring Kelantan stayed under PAS rule long before the political tsunamis after the sacking of Anwar Ibrahim in 1998 – and long before Malaysians had any access to news other than those dished out on UMNO media – is in itself a record of sorts. And this is made more difficult because Kelantan is not as rich as Selangor or Penang. With limited resources and access to media over the past 23 years, the average Malaysian wonders, how did Nik Aziz make it this far?

Against Dr Mahathir from 1990 to 1999, Nik Aziz survived without the new media, presently enemy number one to BN’s traditional propaganda tool in the form of TV channels and daily newspapers. One can also call him lucky for he received help from UMNO’s splinter party Semangat 46 led by Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah in 1990 and 1995, before the reformasi era sparked by the events of September 1998.

In the 23 years since 1990, Nik Aziz and his aura politically transformed Kelantan. With 95 percent of its population Malays – the same community who UMNO now claims to have solid support from – Nik Aziz’s leadership became the iron wall that kept UMNO’s dominance at bay, in fact, effectively making a mockery of all succeeding UMNO leaders’ goal to make a comeback in Kelantan.

Even Abdullah’s image as ‘Mr Clean’ and as a pious Muslim could not work magic to bring down PAS’s reign in Kelantan.

In 1990, Nik Aziz who led PAS joined hands with Tengku Razaleigh to make a clean sweep against BN, 39-0. In 1995, PAS retained Kelantan government with 36 state seats against 7 for BN.

In 1999, it was almost another clean sweep for Kelantan, losing only two out of the 43 state seats contested, this time without help from Semangat 46 which was on its death bed.

One-seat majority, only in Kelantan

Then in 2004, the opposition’s darkest period in recent electoral history, BN managed to snatch a whopping 21 seats in Kelantan against PAS’s 24. BN’s subsequent victory in Pengkalan Pasir by-election further reduced PAS’s majority to one seat. But despite hanging on to one-seat majority, the PAS administration continued. A rare feat, especially when seen in the context of Malaysia’s money-ridden politics where it is normal for elected representatives to jump ship (and jump again) for obvious reasons.

Under Nik Aziz’s leadership, the Kelantan state government survived and managed to regain two-third majority in 2008.

In the just concluded 13th general election, Nik Aziz delivered his parting slap to BN, winning two-third majority for his administration.

Nik Aziz has set high standards for politicians

COMMENT Many Kelantanese only know Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat as a menteri besar and his departure on Monday as head of the state government, after 22 years, may have caught many by surprise. However, it has been an expected move on his part.

The frail-looking Nik Aziz has been in and out of hospital of late, but his contest in the state seat of Chempaka, which he successfully defended with an increased majority of 6,500 votes, stems from his pacifying the Kelantanese that he will remain in power. His statements before the election reflect this.

Nik Aziz himself, and many PAS leaders as well, know that if he were to step down before the general election, PAS may have a problem retaining the state, for the Kelantanese would stay with PAS because the party represented their spiritual leader.
……….

Despite being an Islamic scholar, the respect and aura around Nik Aziz transcends racial boundaries. The man is open to all, and shows his respect for other religions as well.

Nik Aziz Nik Mat and Penang bishop Sebastian FrancisHe enjoys a good relationship with DAP leader Karpal Singh, despite the lawyer’s tough stance on hudud and the Islamic state. Nik Aziz also warmly received a visit from head of the Penang Diocese, Bishop Sebastian Francis.

During the ceramah sessions held by the various Pakatan parties nationwide, people regardless of race would come in droves just to see, listen and to meet with Nik Aziz.

Nik Aziz’s withdrawal from active politics has been as quiet as the way he stepped into the hot seat in Kelantan in 1990.

GE13: Amid drizzle, thousands welcome Nik Aziz to Putrajaya

Nik Aziz was greeted with an astounding cheer when he went up the stage, but he delivered his speech sitting down. He had been in Putrajaya and around Kuala Lumpur since yesterday morning, which left him visibly tired.

PUTRAJAYA, April 27 — In an otherwise quiet Putrajaya, thousands of supporters braved a drizzle last night to catch a glimpse of PAS spiritual adviser Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat who came to support PAS candidate Datuk Husam Musa’s bid to represent the country’s administrative capital.

The mainly civil service electorate, their families and others from neighbouring areas filled an entire block of car park space behind the Palace of Justice here, a crowd more commonly seen during carnivals and events held by the government.

The rock concert-size crowd was a lot more than the excited supporters who had swarmed around Nik Aziz after he joined them in Friday prayers earlier in the day at the nearby Tuanku Mizan Mosque, photos and videos of which were spread on social networks to indicate Putrajaya folk’s support for PAS and him.
