Being Dino’s partner was a lot of work sometimes. Amongst many other things, you seldom woke up with him beside you. He was a boss, after all, and had a lot to do. It was hard to get used to, but you tried, for him.

So when you tried rolling over and bumped into a body, you were actually a little startled. Your eyes shot open, and you lifted yourself up onto an elbow to look down at who was next to you.

Of course, it was Dino, but you had him with you so rarely that you were shocked awake at even being next to someone this early and your brain couldn’t keep up.

What if it was a stranger? That’d never happen, but you couldn’t help but jump to conclusions in your sleepy state.

“Mnh…” Dino let out a groan, opening an eye but otherwise not moving his face from his pillow so he could peer up at you. “Whatcha doin’…?”

“Oh, sorry… You startled me,” you admitted quietly. “I don’t remember the last time I woke up next to someone, so…”

You could see how even despite being on the edge of falling asleep once more, a frown graced Dino’s features.

He reached up to grab your shoulder and gently coaxed you back down next to him. “Apologies, love… Got some time to sleep more today.”

You nodded along slowly, getting back into a more comfortable position beside your lover, allowing him to pull the blanket back over your shoulders.

You reached out to gently brush some of his hair back and out of his only visible eye, relaxing. He truly looked so soft this early, still trying to sleep. How you missed this sight.

“You should sleep some more, then.”

You felt his hand fumble around your arm lazily before forcing its way underneath and latching onto your waist so he could shuffle you a little closer.

“Sleep with me…”

You nodded once, returning his embrace. He squeezed you nice and tight before relaxing entirely in your hold, and your heart swelled, watching Dino doze off once more.

Squalo watched you grumble with narrowed eyes. You’d been complaining for the better portion of this trip to North America, and it was winter.

You’d made it quite known you weren’t good in the cold, apparently.

“God, snow is awful!”

Did you ever shut the fuck up?

“Feh, who even has the energy to kill in this weather-?”

“Are you fucking done?”

You huffed loudly as Squalo finally sped up to catch up with you, looking up at him a little bitterly. He didn’t seem to suffer from the cold as much. How lucky.

“It’s fucking cold! It’s dumb; you have your jacket and gloves -one of your hands is metal anyway- and super long hair to keep you warm!”

What had you told him? Bel had shredded your last jacket on a mission back in Italy, apparently, and that meant you were waiting for a new one to be sent out. When that would happen was up for debate.

“You should’ve brought a different fucking jacket-“

“Hah, I got yelled at by someone for trying to wear a jacket that wasn’t apart of uniform! It’s dumb! I hate it here!”

His eyebrow twitched at this, scowling. He’d give you a pass on cutting him off this once.

“Isn’t the weather in Italy the fucking same? Winter isn’t any different here than back at the base.”

There was another grumble from you about the weather in Italy before you threw out your arms and stomped your foot, boot crunching the snow beneath it.

“But I can stay inside and stack up blankets and crap to stay warm! We’re in a country we don’t live in!”

That was grasping at straws, really, but he’d let you go on your tangent. It was easier than trying to dispute the difference of winter between North America and Italy.

Still, your tangent had been going on a little damn long, and it was starting to get on his nerves.

“Besides, do you even like the snow? Huh? I doubt it- Ah–!”

Squalo watched you actually stumble after dropping his jacket onto your shoulders, snorting lowly.

“Huh? What the hell?” You quickly straightened yourself up and lifted his jacket a bit, blinking quickly. “Why the hell are you giving me your jacket?”

“God, all you’re fucking doing is complaining about the cold. If you need a jacket that’s uniform, then mine should do! Now quit the fucking whining; if we get this done now we can get back to a hotel a lot quicker.”

You stared up at him, dumbly he might add, before your cheeks gained some form of colour.

Being the ever mature assassin you were, you let out a loud and obnoxious noise at his show of kindness and turned around, stomping and huffing as you pushed your arms through the sleeves.

“Well, thanks!”

Oregano slowly looked up from her paperwork, unbothered by your sudden entrance. She’d become quite used to you just throwing her door open without any real invitation.

“I’ve brought you a gift!”

Gifts weren’t unusual, either. You liked to flatter her quite a bit.

“Oh? What do you have?”

You shoved out a plate, and her brows rose. Gifts may have been a little less uncommon, but food was new.

“I made you gingerbread men! I looked up a recipe, but I had to do a whole bunch of conversions; I’m so bad at converting things… Anyway, Basil tried one and didn’t die, so I think they’re fine!”

Your rambling was cute. You weren’t the greatest chef, so your effort was rather appreciated.

“They look wonderful, my dear. Thank you.”

Oregano took the plate from you, and she smiled as she watched you light up, cheeks pink and hands fiddling with your tie. You were cute when she praised you.

“You must have worked hard on them with your work as well. Good job.”

“Oh, oh, I’ve finished my paperwork for now! Thank you!”

You really did glow when praised.

“You should try one! They’re still a little warm.”

She picked up one of the gingerbread men to inspect it closely, and admired your fine handiwork on decorating them. She smiled in amusement upon noticing some of the more familiar looking characteristics on them.

“Did you make them after everyone? How cute.”

“Yeah, I thought it’d be fun!”

With this in mind, she eyed over the plate before setting down the one she’d picked up. Although curious, you remained silent and watched her pick up two different ones, ever so gentle in her moments.

“Here. Have one with me.”

She held one out to you, and you took it gratefully. You made sure to see who she’d given you before eating it, and stopped.

“Is something the matter?”

You looked at her treat, and she showed you hers.

Oh. Oh. She’d given you the one you’d decorated as her, and she had taken the one that looked like you.

Hayato physically jumped on the spot when you all but kicked open his office doors, and his eyes narrowed at you. Jesus fucking christ. Did you have to?

“So, I know you’re busy or whatever, and you get grumpy when people bother you while you’re working, but-“

“Could you hurry up?”

“-but I figured that since you love me and all it wouldn’t matter as much. We don’t have time to take you out anywhere, but look!”

You held up a box with a bright smile despite his mounting annoyance. You stepped up to his desk and held it out to him expectantly, and he sighed heavily, shoulders slumping.

You were difficult when you felt like being so, and you were an awfully persistent person. If he didn’t open the damn thing, you’d only complain until he did.

He took the box from you, at least grateful he didn’t have to worry about making a mess with wrapping paper, or anything else of the sort.

You were starting to shuffle around on your feet impatiently, and he watched you carefully as he very slowly lifted the lid off the box.

“Yah, come on, pick it up.”

“Che,” he snorted lowly, “you could afford to be a little more patient, you know.”

You jut your bottom lip out childishly at this; you heard that quite often.

He lifted the card you’d written on, opening it shortly so he could read what you’d written inside. While your Italian was fluent and nice to look at, your Japanese was a little rougher, and slightly messier. It was cute, almost. You’d taken it upon yourself to learn when you’d met them all despite never visiting at any point; it was sweet.

“I’m surprised you could read that! You don’t have your glasses on.”

“Do you want me to tear it up?”

He didn’t have them because he’d forgotten them in his room and had been too lazy to retrieve them, and he could tell by your smile you knew this.

“Do you want them?”

His eyes narrowed dangerously, but he snatched his glasses out of your hand and slid them on.

“Huh. Your Japanese is still weird with them on.”

“Hey, that’s mean! It’s so hard to write it, I tried so hard!”

He puffed out a soft laugh at this, moving to the gift you’d hidden amongst some decorative paper, moving it out of the way so he could remove it from the box.

He stopped for a short moment to stare at the glass orb, blinking slowly. Hah?

“So, Boss and Takeshi told me that you used to really like space and aliens and junk!” You chimed, though you did sound a little nervous because of his silence.

You waved your hands out at the glass ball, shrugging gently. It was a stunning mix of colours amongst a majority of black, though he could notice green and red were most prominent.

“So, I thought a decorative piece for your office would be nice! Space, something you can see often…” You spun your hands as you continued rambling.

“Haha, I chose red and green because of your flames and your eye colour, actually, and it’ll look nice during Christmas, too! Right? Anyway-“

“Stop for a moment. You talk so much.”

He waved you closer, and you shuffled around his desk warily, pushing your palms together. He had to usher you into leaning down to his height so he could be face to face from his seat.

“It’s nice. Thanks.”

Your eyes lit up before they squeezed shut when he grabbed the back of your head so he could kiss your forehead.

With that, he pet your shoulder and turned back to his desk, setting both the glass ball and the birthday card off to the side before cleaning up the paper in the box and moving that to the floor near his bin.

As tests started to rear their heads, students around Namimori were left to find time to study, struggling to handle it at times.

While usually in one whole group, one Miura Haru has decided “sometimes us girls need to spend time together, too!” and set up her own little study session.

While Kyoko could spend time studying in the day, as Namimori Middle’s tests were on a different date to Midori’s, she couldn’t stay the night with you and Haru. When done, she packed her things, wished you luck for studying and bid you both farewell.

The studying after that didn’t last much longer, and with some time still left until Midori’s test in comparisons to Nami-chuu’s, Haru had decided on her own she was done with studying. You couldn’t blame her. Kyoko seemed to be the one that kept you both focused.

As night came around, the studying session evolved into the sleepover part of the event. It had been a while since either of you had just spent time in pyjamas, lounging around on pillows and doing whatever you wanted.

You couldn’t be surprised when somehow the topic of conversation slowly steered into that about boys. Haru had a tendency to do so.

“So, do you like anyone?”

Very straight to the point.

“Eh, no… There’s not anyone I like right now.”

“Oh, that’s boring! I was hoping you’d like someone!”

Haru pouted a little at this before falling to her side, landing amongst the many pillows her bed had.

“Have you ever thought about your first kiss?”

You blinked before turning your head, shrugging a little. “Not entirely… No one our age seems like the type I’d be into anyway, so I don’t think I’d be kissing them.”

Haru stared up at you before huffing out a laugh. “That’s true! There’s no way anyone our age would be worth giving my first kiss to.”

She waved her hands around, sighing pretty obnoxiously. “All the boys are… Won’t they probably just break our hearts anyway? It’s not worth it!”

You nodded a little in agreement, before shifting your weight a little nervously. “Well, what if…” You looked away when she gave you her attention again. “Does it have to be a boy…?”

“Y-You know, because none of the boys we know are that great, and those who are aren’t really our type, right?” You mumbled quickly, waving your hands in front of your chest.

Haru seemed to think this over for a few moments, weighing her options. She shot up into a sitting position and nodded firmly, just once. “You’re right! It shouldn’t be that bad if it’s another girl you know, right?”

“Besides, it can be like practice, or something, and we won’t have to worry about wasting our first kiss!” She seemed to be rambling a little.

You breathed out a little in relief. She was embarrassed, too.

“So what if we just… make it each other…?”

She held your gaze, as if trying to find something. Whether she found it or not, she nodded.

“That sounds okay…”

It was tense, and you both were shuffling around on the mattress, fiddling with the linen nervously.

“U-Um… You should come closer, then.” Your voice was quiet, and close to wavering.

Despite it, Haru inched closed to you, your knees bumping in the process. She could feel her heart beating so hard, she was worried if she got too close you’d hear it, too.

While she lifted your head up a little more, you made the first move to get closer, your noses brushing.

Her eyes were so beautiful.

She seemed to find some courage, and Haru was the one who made contact first, and you visibly jumped in surprise.

It only lasted a couple seconds, but she didn’t pull too far back. She blinked slowly, holding her breath. That was nice.

“I… think real practice would be good,” she mumbled softly. “Right?”

You nodded quickly, cheeks burning. “Yeah… Can… Can I kiss you again?”

“Yes.”

You lifted your hands, a little shaky, to rest on her cheeks and pull her closer to you once more.

This time when your lips pressed together, you felt yourself relax a little more. Your nerves were shot, but you found that Haru seemed to soothe them.

Was this right? You didn’t really care. It was practice, wasn’t it? It was practice. Practice.

Her lips were so soft. Of course they were; she took immaculate care of herself. Were yours soft? What was it like for her?

You realised your eyes had been closed when you had to open them after Haru pulled back a little to breathe.

She tilted her head a tad, thinking over her next move. She wanted more. More.

“Again…?”

You couldn’t say ‘no’ to that.

“Please.”

Haru was still before shuffling closer to you, enough that her thighs sat on yours, and she wrapped her fingers around your shirt.

She couldn’t get enough of you. Was it okay to be doing this? It felt nice. It was warm, and comforting, and good.

She pecked your lips again before mumbling, and through the haze you had to strain to hear her.

“What…?”

“Open your mouth.”

“Oh.”

Of course you listened. You wanted to keep going. You wanted to keep kissing her, and you wanted to hold her so bad, and you didn’t want to stop.

Steeling your nerves, you moved your hands to rest on her waist, only for you both to jump and pull apart when an intrusive ringtone cut through the silence.

Haru blinked a couple times before her face flushed, and it registered what was happening. “Oh, my phone- I’ll just-!”

She scrambled off of you, tripping and falling from her bed while she reached for her phone and hurrying to answer it.

Your eyes widened before you slapped your hands over your face, your fingers digging softly into your reddening cheeks, and your palms hovering over your mouth.

What was that?!

The tension in the room when she hung up was so, so thick, and you could barely breathe.

“U-Uh, Kyoko-chan just called to say she forgot a book, so she’ll be over tomorrow morning to grab it…!”

“R-Right…”

Haru shifted her weight from foot to foot, fumbling around with her phone.

“W-We should probably also… get some sleep.”

“Yes.”

Haru climbed back onto her bed and pulled her blanket back, petting one side for you to get in.

Once you were both as comfortable as you could be, back to back, that heavy silence hung over you both once more. You hated it. Had you made a mistake?

Haru stared at her wall quietly before shaking her head the best she could as she laid on her side. “No… Do you?”

You squeezed your eyes shut before also turning to face her, finding you had to force your eyes open.

Dating Ryohei took a lot sometimes. A lot of energy, and a lot of understanding. A lot of care, and willingness to accept every injury he got, from a fight or a match. A lot of gentleness when he struggled, and a lot of support when he insisted on going forward.

It took a lot, but you’d give it all.

Despite that, sometimes it made others question just what exactly he gave in return.

“You’ve been dating for a while now, right?”

You nodded along to Haru’s question, waiting for whatever question it was. You got asked a lot of things at school, like why him? Do you have low standards? Does he know he’s dating you?

They were usually digs at Ryohei, and you hated every single one of them. But Haru wasn’t like the teasing kids at school.

“I’m curious! Doesn’t he use, like, a pet name for you?”

You blinked before lifting an eyebrow. “Pardon? A pet name? No, not really.”

She pouted in disappointment. “Nothing? Just your name? That’s boring!”

You closed your eyes and let her grab your shoulders, shaking you around as she whined.

You lit up a little, humming when Ryohei dropped an arm around your shoulders. He could get pretty touchy when he felt like it.

Ryohei watched you closely, and you looked so animated to him in that moment. So out of it.

He frowned a little, tilting his head. Were you upset?

You stopped talking and had to take a moment to register what he’d asked. He could be awfully sharp, too. When he felt like it, anyway.

“Oh, was it-? I’m sorry!” Haru waved her hands around wildly, pulling a face. “I didn’t mean to upset you! I just wanted to know and got caught up in it and didn’t realise!”

“No, don’t apologise! I’m alright!”

Ryohei lifted his arm to allow you movement, watching you fuss over Haru, and vice versa. He looked down at Kyoko for an answer.

“Ah, she wanted to know if used any pet names. You don’t, do you?”

“No? Is that important?”

“No!” Your yell startled the two a little. “Of course it isn’t! Affection isn’t only verbal, and I know you don’t show it verbally, either. It’s okay!”

He could tell by how Kyoko’s brows furrowed, that answer was obviously not comforting. He could hear it in your tone, and see it in the way you shook your hands around.

“Seriously, it’s fine-“

You had to take a step back to keep your balance when Ryohei shot forward and wrapped his arms around your waist. He tightened his grip and lifted you up off the ground.

“Your name is special to me, so it’s what I want to use!”

“Huh?!” Your face flushed at his sudden exclamation, gripping his shoulders tightly so you didn’t fall. “What are you talking about?!”

“It’s important what I call you, and your name is the best thing to use! So let me use your given name as often as I can!”

God, he was also incredibly embarrassing sometimes, too. Very loving, and caring, but so, so embarrassing.

“Fine, that’s fine, just-! Put me down!”

You held out a mug to the redhead, and he took it with a mumbled thanks. You took yours from the tray and carefully sat down next to him, placing the tray down on the table in front of you.

“Do you have any plans for Christmas, Enma-san?”

“Mm? Just staying here with the others, like usual I guess…” He blinked down at his hot chocolate, watching the little marshmallows bump into each other. “What about you…?”

You took a small sip after blowing on your drink. “Nothing thus far.”

It was quiet for a small moment until a pained noise from Enma caught your attention.

You put your mug down and leant forward to get a better look at his face, eyes wide. “Did you burn your tongue? Was it too hot?”

Enma nodded shortly, and stuck his tongue out enough for him to gently prod at it to see how badly burnt it was.

You lifted a brow slowly before looking out at the crowd of people. “You don’t ever come to these things. I think Tsunayoshi would have understood your anxiety about being around so many people. You’re not exactly… a people person.”

Shoichi smiled crookedly at this, but couldn’t exactly dispute this claim. He wasn’t a people person, by any means. He was a mechanic, an inventor. He worked with gadgets and machines in the safety of his work room and maybe with Spanner as company.

“Maybe, but it’s Christmas, so I figured I should try this time.”

You nodded along slowly, intertwining your hands behind your back as you people watched.

“Well, I’m glad you’re here. I don’t really see you too often.”

That was true. Still–

“Eh? You’re gl- Why?” Shoichi pointed at himself. “I’m barely conversation material in a one on one setting.”

You looked at him and smiled shortly, shrugging your shoulders. “I like your company. You don’t force me to dance with strangers for Christmas, and you’re smart. I like talking with you.”

You huffed out a laugh when his cheeks reddened; while he had gotten older he could handle a compliment here and there, it was still so easy to embarrass him.

“Oh, would you like a drink, then?” You offered. “It might help you relax.”

Shoichi huffed softly, rubbing his arm to try and calm his beating heart. “I’m not exactly someone who drinks, either…”

“Mm… Would you mind being a social drinker with me today?” You then wondered. “I’m sure I can find you something even you can handle.”

He didn’t think he was too much of a lightweight, but he did appreciate the effort to look out for him.

“Ah, if you think you can, then… One drink is okay.”

You lit up a little and nodded once. “Fantastic. We can go outside, if you’d like?” You waved him after you, heading off to find a drink for the two of you. There had to be someone walking around you could ask.

“I heard Tsunayoshi had some people put up lights for the party. Would you mind looking at them with me?”

Shoichi sped up a little to walk by your side, and he smiled a little. Looking at Christmas lights with you… It didn’t sound too bad.

“I’d like that, actually.”

“It’s too cold! I don’t want to go on this stupid mission!”

Squalo watched you kick up a fuss, quiet as you gathered your stuff. He paid attention to every item you grabbed so he would remember them, so you wouldn’t complain about losing them if you forgot one on your way back.

“I just wanna stay here! It sucks, but it’s indoors at least…!”

“Just hurry up. The faster we leave, the faster this gets done, the faster we get home.”

You grumbled about it the entire way out of the estate, and he let you grouch on your way through. It’d get it out of your system and then you could get to work; you at least knew when to shut up.

You also promptly ignored every dig or mocking remark made at you as you pulled on gloves, a thicker coat, earmuffs. Because of your thick snow boots, the scarf you were wrapping around your neck. They could make fun of you all they liked, but you wanted to stay warm. Fuck ‘em.

Once you’d made enough of a trek away from the estate, pushing through snow with irritation, you eventually slowed to a stop.

“What?”

Squalo stopped next to you, and leant down when you waved at him to. He stayed still, head bowed a touch so you could reach up and slip your (his) earmuffs onto his head. He straightened with a low noise, a grunt of thanks.

“You should start killing people if they’re gonna make fun of you for wearing fucking earmuffs, you know.”

He blinked at you slowly before lifting a leg. You yelled out when he hooked his foot into the back of your knees and you fell, knees hitting the snow.

“You bastard! Give them back and freeze, then!”

Squalo snorted and headed off again, not waiting for you to scramble out of the snow and catch up to him. You didn’t.

He jerked forward after you threw a crudely made snowball at the back of his head, poorly constructed due to your gloves.

“Oi! You stupid bitch; just get up and come on!”

“Bastard! That’s what you get!”
