About this Item
Archive of 23 pieces relating to the secret cities of the Atom Bomb, consisting of 14 real photo postcards, 7 press photos, and two timecards from the Clinton Engineer Works, which became the headquarters for the Manhattan Project. We have four press photos from Washington of the Hanford Engineer Works, a Manhattan Project site founded in 1943 which produced the B Reactor, the first full-scale plutonium production reactor in the world. In addition, two press photos depict the aftermath of the bomb, with one showing the "jade green glasslike substance" that had fused from the sand at the Alamogordo test site, and the other being the iconic photo of the lone arch of Nagasaki standing amid a field of wreckage. One press photo shows three men at the Hanford site - a uranium canning supervisor, a radiation inspector, and a mechanical engineer - playing a round of archery where the bullseye had been replaced by an atom. Several of the photos in the archive are aerial shots of Oak Ridge's production facilities, residences, administration centers, and even its very own shopping center. Oak Ridge was given the name of the "Secret City" because no one except those who lived there knew it existed. The Clinton Engineer Works plant had been converted by the government into a secret city home to more than 75,000 people devoted to the completion of the atomic bomb. The entire town and facilities were fenced in, with armed guards at each entry. The 14 photo postcards and two timecards also represent the center of the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, Tennessee. This archive gives a great sense for the scale of this endeavor, showing rows upon rows of housing and sprawling production facilities that existed underneath the nose of the American public and created some of the most impactful technology in human history. In very good condition. Seller Inventory # 19715
