Avatar director James Cameron has teased what's in store for the next instalment in the film series.

Speaking at the Critics' Choice Awards, Cameron told Deadline that Avatar 3 would see the element of fire and two new cultures make their debut on-screen.

"Fire has a symbolic purpose in the film and there’s a culture that is specifically around that concept. That’s probably saying too much as we speak," he revealed.

"You’re going to meet two completely new cultures in the next film. We met the Omaticaya, we met the Metkayina, and you’re going to meet two new cultures in the next film, and it kind of rove a little more freely around the world of Pandora to different places."

Following the box-office success of The Way of Water, viewers should hope to see Avatar 3 in the not too distant future.

While fans had to wait 13 years for a follow-up to the first film, Avatar 3 is most likely to be released around December 2024, assuming there are no delays.

Cameron previously told Digital Spy in December that the film is currently on track for release, with the bulk of the work already being completed.

"We've already done the bulk of the work. We still have to go through the whole finish process with Wētā FX on Avatar 3. But I'm pretty sure that we’re going to be back here in a couple of years," he said.

Since its release in December last year Avatar: The Way of Water has made around $1.8 billion globally, with the film being set to overtake Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.92 billion).

Avatar: The Way of Water is now playing in cinemas worldwide. The first film is streaming on Disney+.
