Pygmy slow loris born at Columbus Zoo

Kathy Lynn Gray, The Columbus Dispatch

A pygmy slow loris has been born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium to first-time parents Gouda and Muenster.

The baby, born last Tuesday, already is climbing and is on public view in the Nocturnal Building within the Australia and the Islands region, a zoo official said today. Its gender has not been determined.

The gestation for the pygmy loris is five to six months. After the baby is born, the mother carries it on her back or stomach.

A nocturnal forager, the pygmy loris weighs about a pound as an adult and can live up to 20 years, according to the Duke Lemur Center in Durham, N.C.

The species is considered vulnerable because of habitat loss, hunting and the pet trade in its native Vietnam, Laos and China.
