In 2001, the movie Gadar featuring Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel was a huge hit and received praise from all. But did you know that Ameesha was initially dissuaded from playing the character of Sakeena? The actress disclosed this information on Wednesday at the launch event of the sequel's trailer.
According to Ameesha, she was advised against playing the role of a mother as it could have a negative impact on her career. Several popular names from the film industry suggested that she not take up the role. Ameesha mentioned that in her previous films with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn, she played the role of a college girl and in both films with Hrithik Roshan, she was also a college student.
She further said, "So, when this story was narrated to me and Kaho Na Pyaar Hai was yet to be released, everyone told me I won’t be able to do the role of a mother! I love challenges, I want to step out of my comfort zone and conquer them. I had faith, I knew my director was brilliant. I knew a love story so beautiful was never written and will not ever be written. I just had to say yes."
Ameesha Patel stated that prior to its release, Gadar was referred to as ‘gutter’, which greatly saddened her. She also revealed that when Gadar 2 was announced, there were similar discussions regarding her character. She stated, "When Gadar 2 was in talks, the same conversations started happening. ‘Dude, have you seen yourself on Instagram?’That girl who did Lazy Lamhe, how can she do Gadar now? How will she play a mother to a boy in his 20s? Those same questions were raised. But I just had to do it. We kept doing look tests for hours on end. Finally, I got a text from Anil Sharma, who wrote, 'My precious Sakina is back'."
Gadar 2 is a sequel to the 2001 blockbuster film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. The film is directed by Anil Sharma and is set in 1971 amidst the "Crush India" movement and follows Tara Singh as he travels to Lahore, Pakistan to bring back his son. Along with Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel, the film also stars Utkarsh Sharma, Simrat Kaur, Manish Wadhwa, and Gaurav Chopra in pivotal roles.
Gadar 2 is slated to hit the big screen on August 11.
