Drilling by hand: Wheel Brace, Jaw Brace, Stock for Bits, Small Brace "Kuri Kuri"

Reliable tools for drilling holes by hand! Every standard type of bit for wood or metal with a circular shank which is commercially available can be inserted into the wheelbraces, up to the size given in each case. For square-ended bits you need a jaw brace. Adaptors (bottom of page) will help to attach many other bits.

Jaw Brace with integral ratchet

The hallmark of these braces for manual operation is their high-quality workmanship. Clockwise and anti-clockwise rotation by means of a ratchet. Made in France.

Jaw Brace with integral ratchet and three-jaw chuck

For drill bits with a straight hexagonal shank from 5 to 16 mm. Drill bits with hex shanks are readily available in many sizes. It’s the ideal brace for anyone with a stock of modern drill bits. Drill bits are held very firmly by this brace. Also suitable for drill bits with conical square shank! The square shank of drill bit is inserted so that the end of the shank sits in the square socket at the base of the chuck to stop the drill bit from slipping. Less suitable for drill bits with round shanks, as these tend to slip under greater load.

Jaw Brace with integral ratchet and four-jaw chuck

The square shank of drill bit is inserted so that the end of the shank sits in the square socket at the base of the chuck to stop the drill bit from slipping. The drill bit is centred by means of the 4 jaws. The integral ratchet makes it easier to work in hard to reach places. Plastic handles. An outstanding brace for holding drill bits with a square shank. The square socket at the base of the chuck measures 7.5 x 7.5 mm. This dimension determines in part the choice of drill bit. The end of the shank should be slightly under 7.5 x 7.5 mm or filed down to that size. At least at one point the shank should measure 6 mm across to prevent the drill bit from slipping. The thick part of the shank may be up to 16 mm across.

Jaw brace DeLuxe with integral ratchet

Technical realization as above, but enhanced by several details that turn this tool into an aesthetic delight. The burnished steel parts combine with the brass sleeves to create an optically stunning overall impression. Crank handle and head are made of kotibé, a fine-grained, mahagoni-coloured wood.

Jaw Brace with plastic handles

This jaw brace has a four-jaw chuck, which means that the bit is clamped by a very reliable mechanism with four jaws. There is an integral ratchet to make drilling easier in confined spaces. Handles made of black plastic. An ideal brace for square-ended bits (as found on our spiral bit page), which are gripped immovably. Because the brace is designed to take bits with a square-ended shaft that fits into a square ( 8 x 8 mm) socket at the base of the chuck, bits with round shafts are held in place only by pressure from the four jaws in the chuck. Round bits will tend to slip when torque is applied using the brace, and so are not recommended. Made in Taiwan.

Adapter for small conical square Shafts

Our braces have, at the base of the chuck, a square hole to hold immobile the square end of the shaft of various kinds of bits. The size of the hole is designed to accept the most common sizes of square-ended bits. There are however a variety of square-ended bits that are too small to be securely held in the normal, 8 x 8 mm hole. So if used in this brace, they will be held only by the four jaws and can turn or come loose under pressure. With this simple, inexpensive adapter, this problem can be solved. It is a section of square brass tube (in the photo down and to the right). Placed in the square hole at the base of the chuck, it reduces the 8 x 8 mm hole to 6 x 6 mm to hold smaller bits firmly in place. More...

Adapter for jaw braces

Occasionally drill bits cannot be fitted to our jaw braces because the shank is too short to engage with the square hole in the base of the chuck. This adapter effectively lengthens the drill bit by approx. 17 mm to ensure that shorter drill bits are also held securely by the chuck.

Tools with conical shaft for use with brace

The brace can be a very versatile tool, given a good choice of bits with square-ended shafts to fit it. Unfortunately the range of these tools currently available is much reduced and many useful bits are now difficult or almost impossible to find. Over the years though, we have made an effort to track down supplies of these kinds of tools, and on our website one can find a relatively wide variety of them, some of which are currently in production, and others that come on the market from time to time, from warehouse sales for instance. We are working to increase the range of these types of tools that we can offer, because we think hand braces are an enormously useful and versatile tool and one that is far too under-appreciated these days.
