Pros

  • Tons of power and torque
  • Outstanding off-road capabilities
  • Advanced tech features

Cons

  • Heavy and energy-intensive
  • High starting price

What's New?

  • A completely new electric SUV

The 2024 Hummer EV SUV is an electric SUV with stunning performance numbers, the latest tech features, and stellar off-road chops. Pricing starts at $96,550.

After a hiatus of more than a decade, the Hummer nameplate is back. This time, it’s a sub-brand of GMC, and it comes with a pretty big twist. The Hummer SUV is returning as an EV, an all-electric premium SUV. It puts a futuristic spin on the military-inspired styling of its heritage, and it’s full of advanced tech features like the Super Cruise hands-free driving system and much more. Don’t worry — GM hasn’t forgotten to inject the re-imagined Hummer with impressive off-road capability.

The world of high-end electric SUVs has been growing, but the closest serious competitor to the Hummer EV SUV is the Rivian R1S. This is another electric luxury SUV with advanced tech features, impressive off-road capabilities, and astounding performance numbers.

2024 GMC HUMMER EV SUV Pricing

The 2024 GMC Hummer EV SUV starts at $96,550 for the EV2X trim. The tri-motor EV3X model starts at $104,650, and the available Omeda Edition begins at $138,000. Since GM is struggling to produce enough Hummer SUVs to meet demand, you’ll need to contact your local dealer for the latest on the availability of the Hummer EV SUV.

The chief rival of the Hummer EV SUV is the Rivian R1S, which has a starting price of $78,000 and can go just over the $100,000 mark. A few other options in premium luxury SUVs include the BMW iX starting at $87,100, the Tesla Model X starting at $99,990, and the Mercedes-EQ EQS SUV starting at $104,400.

Hummer EV2X SUV $96,550
Hummer EV3X SUV $104,650
Hummer EV Omega Edition SUV $138,000

These are manufacturer’s suggested retail prices (MSRP) and don’t include the $2,295 factory-to-dealer delivery fee (destination charge).

Before buying a Hummer EV SUV, check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to know what you should really pay.

Driving the 2024 GMC HUMMER EV SUV

We tested the Hummer EV SUV Edition 1 (now discontinued but similar to the Omega Edition) and came away impressed. The acceleration of this super SUV is simply astounding. In our experience driving the 3-motor electric powertrain, the Hummer can be a quiet, comfy cruiser or a cannonball.

The Watts to Freedom launch mode isn’t for the faint of heart; it throws you in the back of your seat like a steep drop on a roller coaster. With 830 horsepower and instant torque delivery to all four wheels, the Hummer has all the power you could realistically want.

The Hummer EV SUV is a surprisingly agile behemoth. According to GM, it has the same turning radius as the Chevy Bolt. This is achieved with 4-wheel steering; the rear wheels can turn up to 10 degrees. A low center of gravity (thanks to the battery packaged in the floor) and 4-wheel steering make this massive SUV more nimble than we expected.

However, the Hummer can only disguise its weight so much. There are still some reminders that this is a hefty electric vehicle. The brakes are adequate, but it still brakes like a big, heavy truck.

The off-road chops of the Hummer EV SUV are admirable if you’re into off-roading with something this big. The Off-Road and Terrain drive modes, a tight turning radius, adjustable ground clearance, and full-length skid plates make the Hummer up for anything.

CrabWalk mode is perhaps a bit gimmicky, but it’s a fun gimmick. In addition to maneuvering off-road, we also used it to get in and out of tight parallel parking spots. Serious off-roaders will want the upgrades that come with the Extreme Off-Road Package, but every Hummer EV is a capable off-roader.

Rugged Interior

The interior of the Hummer EV SUV is a far cry from the military vehicle that inspired it. This SUV has premium materials, an upscale design, and the latest tech features. There’s plenty of space in both rows of seats and a big cargo hold that gets bigger with fold-flat back seats.

The interior design strikes a nice balance of rugged and luxurious. It’s also high-tech, with a digital gauge cluster and a vast 13.4-inch infotainment system with beautiful graphics and a user-friendly interface powered by Google.

That said, the Edition 1 model we drove didn’t feel like a luxury SUV with a six-digit price tag. We couldn’t help but notice some parts-bin sharing with more budget-friendly GM vehicles, and the grab handles don’t feel as solid as they should.

The Hummer’s cabin is designed to be both premium and durable, and it does that job well, but similarly priced electric SUVs feel more elegant inside. When the more affordable trims of the Hummer start coming out, this interior will be a better match for the price.

Surprisingly for an SUV this size, there’s no 3-row seating option. It’s worth noting that the Rivian R1S comes standard with three rows of seats.

Unmistakable Exterior

Like its predecessors bearing the Hummer name, the Hummer EV SUV has an unmistakable aesthetic. The GMC badging is quite subtle, and there’s no question that this is a Hummer. It has a boxy shape, but it also looks futuristic with a unique LED light signature and pronounced fender flares.

One of the coolest features of this SUV is the standard Infinity Roof with four modular sky panels. This allows you to open up the interior for a more open-air experience, plus you can roll down the power rear drop glass. Transparent Sky Panels are optional, providing a panoramic view even with the top on.

The size of the Hummer EV SUV is pretty similar to the Rivian R1S. Compared to a more traditional full-size SUV like the Chevrolet Tahoe, the Hummer is a little lower and wider but has a shorter overall length.

Our Favorite Features and Tech

Watts to Freedom
The thrilling Watts to Freedom feature is a launch mode that unleashes the Hummer’s 3.5-second 0-60 mph time with the tri-motor powertrain.

CrabWalk
Standard on EV2X and up, CrabWalk uses 4-wheel steering to let the vehicle travel in a diagonal direction. The rear wheels can point up to 10 degrees in either direction. CrabWalk makes it easy to maneuver past obstacles in off-road situations, mitigating the need to reverse, steer, drive, and repeat.

Super Cruise
The available Super Cruise system allows for hands-free driving on roads mapped by GM, which at launch includes over 400,000 highway miles in North America.

UltraVision
The available UltraVision system uses up to 18 camera views to let you see everything around your SUV, including what’s underneath you. This is useful in off-road driving and in parking lots.

Extreme Off-Road Package
This available option package turns up the Hummer’s off-road capabilities with 35-inch mud terrain tires, front and rear e-lockers, ball spline half shafts, full-length skid plates, a rubber floor, and more.

Power swing gate
This power swing rear gate comes standard on the Hummer EV SUV. It features a power window and a full-size spare tire. These are usually cumbersome to open and close because of the wheel’s weight, but not with this convenient feature.

Standard Features

The base EV2X trim of the Hummer EV SUV is very well-equipped, which helps to justify its price tag. The standard powertrain is a dual-motor setup with estimated specs of 625 horsepower, a claimed 7,400 lb-ft of torque, and 300 miles of range. All-wheel drive (AWD) also comes standard.

Other standard features include 22-inch wheels with 35-inch all-terrain tires, the Infinity Roof, power rear drop glass, a power rear swing gate with a full-size spare tire and wheel, premium all-weather floor liners with carpet inserts, Adrenaline Mode, fold-flat rear seats, an HD surround-vision camera, 4-wheel steering, CrabWalk, adaptive air suspension, adaptive ride control, 800-volt DC fast-charging capability up to 300 kW, and Extract Mode. With Extract Mode, you can raise the ground clearance of the Hummer by about 6 inches.

The Super Cruise hands-free driving system also comes standard. This semi-autonomous driving system lets you drive on the highway with your eyes on the road and your hands off the wheel on compatible roads that GM has mapped.

Two big screens make the interior of the Hummer feel very high-tech. You get a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 13.4-inch center-mounted infotainment system.

Factory Options

The EV3X model introduces the tri-motor powertrain producing 830 horsepower and massive amounts of torque (a claimed 11,500 lb-ft). The estimated range is up to 314 miles. Additional features include torque-vectoring AWD, 22-inch premium wheels, and the Watts to Freedom launch control feature.

The Omega Edition ($23,355) is an option for the EV3X model and adds unique Neptune Blue matte paint, 18-inch gloss black wheels, and standard Transparent Sky Panels. If you want the Omega Edition, you also need to add the Extreme Off-Road Package.

The Extreme Off-Road Package ($9,995) is optional on both trims. This is a must for off-road enthusiasts, adding 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires with 18-inch wheels, front and rear e-lockers, ball-spline half shafts, UltraVision underbody cameras (with up to 18 available views), skid plates, rocker protectors with assist steps, and rubber flooring.

Engine & Transmission

For the first model year, there are two powertrain options in the Hummer EV SUV. The EV2X trim has a dual-motor setup, and the EV3X get three motors. The dual-motor powertrain has an estimated 300-mile range, and the tri-motor setup gets up to 314 miles of range. GM says that the tri-motor models have a blistering 0-60 mph time of 3.5 seconds.

All-wheel drive is standard on every trim.

3-Year/36,000-Mile Warranty

The GMC Hummer EV SUV is backed by a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty and a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. The battery and related components are covered by an 8-year/100,000-mile warranty. Additionally, GMC throws in complimentary maintenance for your first visit.

KBB Vehicle Review and Rating Methodology

Our Expert Ratings come from hours of both driving and number crunching to make sure that you choose the best car for you. We comprehensively experience and analyze every new SUV, car, truck, or minivan for sale in the U.S. and compare it to its competitors. When all that dust settles, we have our ratings.

We require new ratings every time an all-new vehicle or a new generation of an existing vehicle comes out. Additionally, we reassess those ratings when a new-generation vehicle receives a mid-cycle refresh — basically, sprucing up a car in the middle of its product cycle (typically, around the 2-3 years mark) with a minor facelift, often with updates to features and technology.

Rather than pulling random numbers out of the air or off some meaningless checklist, KBB’s editors rank a vehicle to where it belongs in its class. Before any car earns its KBB rating, it must prove itself to be better (or worse) than the other cars it’s competing against as it tries to get you to spend your money buying or leasing.

Our editors drive and live with a given vehicle. We ask all the right questions about the interior, the exterior, the engine and powertrain, the ride and handling, the features, the comfort, and of course, about the price. Does it serve the purpose for which it was built? (Whether that purpose is commuting efficiently to and from work in the city, keeping your family safe, making you feel like you’ve made it to the top — or that you’re on your way — or making you feel like you’ve finally found just the right partner for your lifestyle.)

We take each vehicle we test through the mundane — parking, lane-changing, backing up, cargo space and loading — as well as the essential — acceleration, braking, handling, interior quiet and comfort, build quality, materials quality, reliability.
