      Critics Consensus

Liar has just enough twists to make it more than just another thriller -- though its treatment of sensitive issues leaves something to be desired.

Simon S Really gripping - ignore the bad reviews; we loved it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/12/24 Full Review Laura T I think the name Liar implies that this show would be nuanced enough to show two individuals in conflict and the mystery would be who is lying. I think it seemed to start out this way for maybe 40 percent of the episodes but then descended into absurdity - and often offensive absurdity. The rapist was at first charming at least outwardly but descended in mustache twirling, smirking evil. Rather than being depicted as an evil man, he became an over the top caricature of a villain. I don't think the crime of rape was treated as the horrific crime it is. Rather just a sensational element to move the story along. For instance, why did the female cop who projected strength have to be raped too? Because it made the show more "entertaining" in the creator's minds Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 07/31/23 Full Review Chris K Much better than I was expecting after having read some of the other reviews on here! A perfectly acceptable whodunnit! Watch it and make your own mind up about it. I did and I am glad I did. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/09/22 Full Review Dee-Jay M The series was definitely portrayed in a way to leave us scratching our heads, feeling somewhat a detective ourselves. Very gripping and realistic to modern society, fantastic actors also! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/24/22 Full Review maria a Fairly well put-together crime meets family drama short series. Not a complete waste of time. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member I found that the story line had great potential to lead me to a great ending. However, after the first 5 and a half episodes left me wanting more and expecting a big twist ,as the episodes hinted, I was left wanting a less traditional and cliché ending to the entire show. I feel that the constant character suspense was thrilling whilst Laura was so stretched as a character that it was too far fetched that to believe she had so much depth. After being revealed she did in fact murder Andrew I was still favouring Andrew as a character than Laura and overall ruined the show for me. Anita Singh Daily Telegraph (UK) It's a bad sign when you find yourself yearning for them to show more of these, because the present-day action is lacking. Rated: 2/5 Mar 2, 2020 Full Review Allison Keene Collider Instead, it becomes a cat and mouse game of often boneheaded moves that become more baffling and outrageous as the series continues, with little sense of motivation or development of its characters. Rated: 2/5 Apr 17, 2019 Full Review Deborah Ross The Mail on Sunday (UK) The drama knows it is exploiting rape for entertainment. Rated: 1/5 Jul 10, 2018 Full Review Eleanor Bley Griffiths Radio Times Liar is the sort of psychological thriller that will leave you lying awake in bed, turning over the evidence in your mind and trying to get at the truth - even though the answer remains elusive. Apr 17, 2019 Full Review Daisy Wyatt iNews.co.uk I could forgive their simplified storytelling if the effect was as dazzling as their previous work. Instead, Liar was disappointing in its lack of nuance and unbelievable lines. Jan 25, 2019 Full Review Alex Moreland metro.co.uk Liar's depiction of rape wasn't just insensitive, it was reckless.
