"We have created a family of models in different configurations but all offering the passenger room of a medium-category car while maintaining the exterior dimensions of a compact mini," said Italdesign chief Giorgetto Giugiaro. "The architecture has been designed in such a way as to allow us to outfit an infinite number of variants without compromising the car's great comfort and extensive interior space."
There were three different versions of the Emas on display at Geneva, with the first being the Emas3 three-door city car that measures less than three-metres long. The Emas3 has just three seats, with the remaining space used for the batteries to power the plug-in electric car. Additional batteries can be installed in place of the other seats.
The other two vehicles were hybrid cars, with the Emas Country being a three-door car with space for five people, and is 550mm longer than the Emas3. The Emas Comfort meanwhile is a five-door model that seats four. Both cars run on an electric motor that provides 240Nm of torque, and is powered by lithium-ion batteries, which in turn is charged by a 1.2-litre flexfuel engine that produces 50bhp and a generator. Both hybrids are able to go from 0-100km/h in 14 seconds, and reach a top speed of 170km/h. Estimated range for the cars in pure electric mode is 50km.
"With this project, we have shown that the car layout can remain unchanged irrespective of the type of fuel system; be it conventional, hybrid with petrol engine, hybrid with natural gas engine or fully electric," Giugiaro said.
The Emas is filled with technological features, such as USB ports, an SD card slot, and an iPhone dock. There are also three touchscreen panels to serve as an infotainment unit, a replacement for several gauges, and to control the car's functions.
