Mr Bean will return to television screens for a one-off sketch, a BBC spokesperson has confirmed.

Rowan Atkinson’s beloved character will appear for a skit during Comic Relief on March 13, almost two decades after his ITV series ended.

Details of the film, which was shot last week, are still unknown, but according to website Chortle, the BBC have confirmed Bean's appearance for Red Nose Day.

Described by Atkinson as "a child in a grown man's body", Mr Bean became a national treasure reaching a peak in UK audience figures of 18.74 million.

Based on a largely physical humour, Bean became a reference point for British culture around the world, going on to be distributed 245 territories worldwide, and was last year voted as one of the greatest Britons ever.

Atkinson has only made one TV sketch as Mr Bean since the series ended in 1995 – a wedding scene released for Red Nose Day in 2007 – but appeared in character for a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon-style spoof TV advert, as well as performing at the London 2012 Olympics.

A new series of The Mr Bean Animated Series will debut on ITV next month.
