Gaius Julius Caesar, as General and Dictator of Rome 49-44 BC, Silver Denarius (3.69g, 18mm), military mint travelling with Caesar through Northern Italy circa April – August 49 BC. Obverse: Elephant advancing to right, trampling over horned serpent below, exergual-ground line below, “CAESA[R]” in exergue. Reverse: Selection of emblems of the Pontificate, from left to right: simpulum, aspergillum, securis (surmounted by wolf’s head), and apex. Sear-1399; Crawford-443/1; Sydenham-1006; RSC-49. A touch unevenly struck resulting in a weak aspect either side, missing R of CAESAR and minor bankers mark to reverse, overall, a good representation of the famous type, idyllic blue-steel and amber toning through the devices, near Very Fine, reverse Very Fine.
