Kelly Ripa's Workout Routine Is Totally Badass

It involves strength training, yoga, and *a lot* of core work.

Kelly Ripa is known for many things: Her impressive TV career, her hilarious sense of humor on Instagram, and her adorable relationship with supportive hubby Mark Consuelos, for starters. Another way Kelly is consistently wow-ing the world: Her fitspo-inducing workout routine.

The 49-year-old actress, mother of three, and Live with Kelly and Ryan host is major goals when it comes to exercising (I mean, have you seen those poppin' abs on her Instagram photos?), and she seems to have endless amounts of energy. Ahead of the 2020 Super Bowl, Kelly even posted an Instagram video of her dance "audition" to join Shakira and J.Lo's Halftime Show, alongside celebrity fitness trainer Anna Kaiser (who is also Shakira's trainer, FYI).

For years, Kelly has worked out with Kaiser, a former dancer and the founder of AKT fitness studio in New York City. Kaiser is known for her dance-infused, high-intensity interval training classes, and she recently spoke to Women's Health about her 360-degree approach to sculpting, saying: “The best thing about the marriage of dance and HIIT is that you’re moving on multiple planes of motion and you’re having fun. You really need to focus on different types of muscular contractions and angles, not just on getting through exercises for the sake of feeling a burn. If you do the same motions over and over, you’re not going to get the full benefit.”

Proof her multifaceted fitness plan works? Look no further than Kelly's six pack and poppin' biceps. Luckily, her trainer shared some insights into Kelly's go-to ways to stay so fit and fierce.

1

She's found a workout plan she genuinely enjoys.

"You need to find something that you love to do, and that will help you show up...that thing that makes you feel really jazzed, and makes you feel great after too," Kaiser previously told Women's Health. Doing so can make it easier to stay motivated, which is a key to Kelly's success, according to her trainer. "She’s stayed consistent, she’s been committed, it’s something that she does for her."

2

Kelly works out regularly.

Kelly is so dedicated to fitness that she actually manages to find time to work out four to five days a week. Kaiser trains with Kelly for 60- to 90-minute sessions, generally in the afternoon to work with her Live With Kelly and Ryan filming schedule.

3

Kelly loves to dance.

"I love to dance, and she loves to dance," Kaiser says. So, she focuses on dance cardio for Kelly's training, in combo with functional training and circuit training, in line with her AKT method.

...including ballet.

Kelly is such a big fan of ballet that she helped achieve the Guinness World Record for the Most Ballet Dancers En Pointe simultaneously last September as part of Live with Kelly and Ryan. Kelly and 305 dancers laced up their ballet slippers at the same time, and held it for a full minute. (Which, Kelly told viewers, took a lot of practice on her part.)

As for her own workouts, Kaiser told People that she and Kelly do arm workouts on a ballet bar, including pulses and pushing off the bar.

5

She uses resistance bands.

As part of Kaiser's AKT regimen, the trainer incorporates a lot of resistance band exercises. So naturally, it's a part of her go-to routine with Kelly too, especially for arm workouts. "We love that contraction and how that feels," Kaiser told People.

6

She makes core training a priority.

There's no denying that Kelly's midsection is toned AF. But don't get too distracted by her abs, Kaiser says they actually focus on strengthening her entire core, not just those six-pack muscles. "Every exercise we do works your full core—the butt, the abs, and the back—at the same time," she says. "If you’re training functionally, you’re hitting those muscles from all planes of motion."

One of Kelly's favorite exercises to engage her entire core: ballers (a.k.a. stability ball knee tucks).

She stays active on vacay.

Kelly regularly shares photos of her active endeavors on vacation, including yoga and paddle boarding. Last year, Kelly posted these pics with her husband Mark Consuelos (a.k.a. her ultimate workout buddy) on an anniversary trip to the Bahamas. In her caption, Kelly joked that “trust and flexibility” keep their relationship alive. (Aww!)

8

She varies her workouts.

While Kelly works out with Kaiser on the reg, she also incorporates different forms of fitness into her routine like SoulCycle classes and yoga.

"I think it’s important for people to work out with a program that offers everything, not just one type of workout over and over again," says Kaiser, "so you’re balancing the amount of cardio and strength you’re doing, and you’re switching it up."

9

She's a big fan of yoga.

As mentioned, in addition to all of Kelly's cardio- and functional-training with Kaiser, she also makes time to Zen out with yoga. "I deep-breathe, and I do a lot of yoga," Kelly told Good Housekeeping, noting she's in it for the mental benefits just as much as the physical ones. She's particularly a fan of "power yoga."

She treats working out as a ritual.

Kelly doesn't screw around when it comes to her workout consistency. She shows up every. single. time. “There are a lot of people that don’t have to work out, and I am so happy for them, but I have to work out for my body type,” Kelly told People. “It’s part of my routine. It’s part of my ritual. It doesn’t just make me look better, but it makes me emotionally feel better.”

11

She thinks of working out as a must for her body *and* mind.

"It would have never have occurred to me to exercise before I had kids. Ever. Now, I find that I need it to clear my head," Kelly told Women's Health. "I need strength and stamina because raising kids is the toughest job there is. And it’s the most rewarding—but it's exhausting, and it's hard work. My childless self would have died laughing seeing me in a gym."

12

She’s into Torch’d.

So many celebrities got into Isaac Boots' Torch'd workouts when gyms were closed during the pandemic, and apparently Kelly is one of them. The workouts are a mix of body resistance, dance conditioning, and intense targeted repetition to tone and firm up your body. And, ya know, if dancing is involved, Kelly is there. Kelly and Ryan Seacrest even did a workout with Isaac on Live with Kelly and Ryan in January 2021. (Kelly owned it, of course.)

She runs, too.

While anything dance-based is Kelly's go-to, she also throws running into the mix. Kelly told People that she'll go for a run one day a week. Apparently, her sister-in-law inspired her to start running.

“My sister-in-law told me this a long time ago when I wasn’t working out, and she was running, and I was like, ‘How do you do that? Why do you do that?’" Kelly said. "And she said, ‘If we wore our insides on our outside, everybody would exercise.'”

14

She works out every day.

Kelly told Good Housekeeping that she doesn't take days off. "I work out every day. It's part of my life," she said. "That's one of the benefits of having kids in school full-time. I'm usually done with work around 11 A.M., so I have time before I pick the kids up from school." Kelly also shared that she doesn't "have the best family history heart-wise, so I really try to keep my heart strong."

15

She pushes herself, even when she doesn't feel like it.

Like everyone else, there are some days that Kelly just isn't feeling working out. "I'm the kind of person who, if I take one day off, well, it's very easy for me to take the next day off and then quit exercising. If I don't do it every day, I won't do it at all," she told Good Housekeeping.

So, she pushes herself to work out, even when she doesn't feel like it. "Sometimes it's not so pleasant, and you don't want to wake up to go on a jog in the morning, but I just force myself to do it," she told Women's Health.
