Real men also wax: The what, when and how of hair removal for men

With more and more men getting waxed, trimmed or stripped — hair removal is no longer just a woman’s thing. We tell you everything there is to know about hair removal, for men.

When to start: Technically you can start at any age, but I normally recommend beginning only as and when necessary. There is really no point or reason in trying to remove the first visible sign of hair on your body. It’s best to start only when the hair starts to grow either too rapidly, begins to feel uncomfortable or go a bit out of control.

Who does it: Most models, actors, body builders, some sportsmen and a lot of “real” men do it. While some of them claim to do it purely for “professional reasons” a lot of them are actually doing it because they prefer to look and feel smooth, clean and well defined. Photographers, stylists and gym trainers insist that removing hair accentuates your assets and is the best way to show off the results of working out for long hours in the gym. I think it’s a valid point and they are perhaps right in saying so.

What does it say about you: Hair removal transcends barriers of age, cast, creed, economics, culture, religion and sexual orientation. I know just as many straight and gay men who do it.  Most men, who do it once, will repeat the process more often than they may actually admit to doing it. Like getting a tattoo done, the process and end results are kind of addictive. And no, removing your hair does not make it grow back any faster or thicker for that matter.

Ultimately the decision is yours. Do you want to go smooth or keep it natural?

What to use

Clippers: Especially useful if your growth is long, thick or bushy. A clipper does not remove the hair completely but shortens the length. A clipper is ideal to use if you (or your partner) like your body retaining some of its natural hair.

Hair-removing cream: The quick, easy and convenient way to remove hair. They are many brands in the market that make hair removal creams - pick whichever you prefer and ensure you follow the usage instructions indicated on the packaging. Avoid hair removal creams if you have very dry or sensitive skin. To play it safe, always apply a water based moisturiser for a few days before and after you go in for this option.

Waxing: Waxing removes hair from the roots and is therefore the most effective and long lasting process to follow. The advantage is waxing keeps your skin looking and feeling smooth for days, if not weeks. Be warned though, that the process can be a bit painful and can often lead to skin breakouts, if the person who is doing it for you does not have a good hand for it or enough experience.

Where to do it

Chest & abs: For a completely slick and clean look, remove all the hair on the chest and abs. Some of you may want to go a step further (as in a bit lower) as well. For those of you who want to keep it looking more real, I suggest trimming your hair instead. While trimming, it’s important to ensure that you achieve an even length all over.

For a sensual visual effect you could remove most of the hair on your upper body, but retain some of it - starting at your naval and merging into the crotch.

Arms: If you have thick or excessive growth and want to prevent excessive sweating, stay cooler and feel lighter then it’s a good idea to keep the underarms completely clean.

If you wear vests, short or half sleeve tops, then you may want to consider trimming or removing the hair on the arms and forearms as well. If you normally wear full sleeve shirts target the hands and fingers.

Legs: Trimming works a lot better than going completely clean — not just because it looks better, but it’s also a lot easier to maintain.

Most women I know are fine with men who trim or remove hair on the upper body but seem to find the idea of your legs looking smoother and cleaner than theirs, a bit extreme.

Vitals: Remove the excessive hair – this will help keep the area both dry and clean. If you have sensitive skin and are prone to a rash (especially during the hot or humid months), then you may want to consider going completely clean, as and when needed.

My tip: always keep her (or him) in mind before you decide what to do.
