The initial construction of Masjid Nabawi started in Rabi al-Awwal in the year 1 AH (622 CE), with the Prophet ﷺ himself taking part in laying its foundations and its development. He marked out the boundary of the site using the tip of a spear he inherited from his father, Abdullah I.
The Masjid Nabawi underwent its first expansion after the time of prophet Muhammad in the days of Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab starting in 638/9 CE (17 Hj.).
