A 1994 release by '80s favorites Huey Lewis And The News, FOUR CHORDS AND SEVERAL YEARS AGO is like a recreation of the average cover band on the '60s fraternity circuit. These 17 songs include R&B classics of the '50s and early '60s--the New Orleans swing of Ernie K-Doe's "Mother-in-Law," Fats Domino's "Blue Monday," and Big Joe Turner's "Shake Rattle and Roll"--and a version of the classic ballad "Stagger Lee" that owes much to the Lloyd Price hit. Lewis and band bash out the songs with evident joy and little posturing, and the sloppiness suits the bar-band vibe much more than the slickness of albums like SMALL WORLD or FORE! Though it wasn't a commercial success, FOUR CHORDS is a big fan favorite.
