Details

Tanjung Sepat is a small, coastal town located approximately 95 kilometers south of downtown Kuala Lumpur.

Visitors often make a detour here to visit the town’s fishing village and indulge in it’s culinary delights.

The town is also an emerging eco/agrotourism destination, with a growing number of visitors arriving over the past decade or so.

Tourist buses are a common sight here, especially on weekends, as local and foreign visitors hungry for a taste of culture and tradition find this serene and calm village very appealing.

Ecotourism/Agrotourism

Bakaugruv Kampung Resort (Website)

Educational nature camps that attract both locals and foreigners are frequently held at this idyllic village-style resort.

Kuan Wellness Ecopark (Website)

One of Malaysia’s first bird’s nest ecology parks. Kuan Wellness Ecopark is also listed in the Malaysia Book of Records as the first birds nest producer to be awarded ISO 22000 (Food Safety Management System) certification.

Multi-Rich Pitaya Sdn Bhd
Company and farm that actively researches and develops secondary dragonfruit products including jams, wines and enzymes. June is the best time to visit the farm, when the dragonfruits are in full bloom.

Ganofarm Sdn Bhd

Ganofarm is a mushroom research company that cultivates edible and medicinal mushrooms as well as other mushroom-based products. Types of mushrooms grown include the rare and expensive Lingzhi mushroom (Mushroom of Immortality), abalone mushrooms and monkey head mushrooms.

There is a homestay located in the vicinity of the farm, with over 30 rooms and chalets available.

Cassava chips factory and farm with over 40 different flavors and shapes of cassava chips. During your visit here, you can also buy freshly fried cassava chips.

Coffee

For authentic, kopitiam-style coffee, head to Joo Fa Trading (Website), a local coffee trader who’s been in the coffee roasting business for over 50 years.

Each morning, the proprietor painstakingly hand-selects, hulls and roasts coffee beans with sugar and margarine inside traditional wood fire kilns, a process that emits an aromatic fragrance detectable from streets away.

After enjoying a cuppa, why not take a tour of the premises, consisting mainly of old school coffee machinery, and witness firsthand the firing up of the kiln or marvel at the rustic grinding machine that still works today!

Pao

The most famous food produce here is ‘pao’, a traditional steamed bun of Chinese origin, with sweet or savoury fillings.

I. Hai Yew Heng

Hai Yew Heng have been around for a long time, operating out of a standalone shoplot where you can see the entire pao-making process. At least 6 types of fillings are available here: mei chai (preserved mustard greens), shen rou (pork), dou sa (red bean), kaya (coconut jam), peanut and vegetables.

II. Mr. Black Hand Made Pau

A more recent addition to the pao scene in town, Mr. Black Hand Made Pau has a comfortable cafe-style seating area great for unwinding after a long day. Must try: Yam Pao, Salted Fish Pao, Rice Wine Chicken Pao.

Seafood

The area is known for its open-air seafood restaurants, many of which are built on stilts across the beachfront. Most of them serve seafood steamboat or hotpot, but seafood bak kut teh is another specialty in the area.

Town Centre

Lovers’ Bridge

Lovers’ Bridge is a long, rickety wooden bridge that leads out to the ocean. Used primarily by fishermen to unload their catch, it is also popular among photo hunters with several shops and seafood restaurants nearby.

Note: The bridge has been torn down, but the area, called Qing Ren Qiao (Lovers’ Bridge Cultural Street) still attracts many visitors. There is a wishing tree, antique displays and murals, as well as 2 other bridges next to Lover’s Bridge that equally provide great backdrops for photography.

Fishing Village

Starting from near the town center, the nooks and crannies of Tanjung Sepat’s fishing village are best explored on foot. There are many fishing boats docked during the low tide, letting you observe how fishermen in these waters operate.

Chinese Opera

The predominant Chinese community in Tanjung Sepat New Village worship many deities but extra reverence is accorded to Tie Dai Yuan Shuai (the Iron General).

Each year there is an elaborate celebration during the birth month of the Iron General deity, which falls during the third month of the Chinese lunar calendar (April or May in the Gregorian calendar). The celebrations usually last a month and is marked with feasts, firecrackers, offerings and traditional Chinese opera shows near the Qing Long Gong temple.

How to get to Tanjung Sepat


Driving is the best way to get here. From Kuala Lumpur city center, Tanjung Sepat is about 1.5 hours’ drive and is accessible via the ELITE or SKVE highway.
